There are loads of poor quality coils about and lots of people are having trouble, so probably the safest bet is a Bosch or Beru coils for a VW Beatle. They're high quality and high temperature and vacuum filled with oil, so unlike the Lucas copies you can't shake the oil around inside them and they are oil tight upside down.

Also, if you only need a 12 volt one Accuspark in EBay do a good one for about £13. They last for ages.

Agreed on the amount of poor coils about.
I bought a Bosch one off eBay and that turned out to be a fake (got my money back which was a bonus).bought a replacement from a vw dealer after that just to be sure.

Roger the Bodger strikes again

Fitted a heat shield for the coil.

I noticed it was getting a bit warmer than I remember around the back of the engine.

As I mentioned I had fitted a heat shield between the carbs and exhaust so I presume I had disturbed the air flow, fitted a 6x3 inch plate between the engine and bulkhead and it seems to keep the hot air away from the coil as it is now warm not hot.

There is nowhere to move the coil to without a major movement of other parts.

I'm off to Woodhall Spa for the weekend on Friday, Breakfast at Holbeach, so will know if It is sorted.
