Something to do with the nationalisation that took place of road haulage, some time after the war iirc (I'd have to look it up to be sure).

Correct but separate from British Rail. I understand that they were renowned amongst their drivers for buying vehicles that always seemed to be quite unsuited for the task as the purchasing decision was only based on price!

Interesting, so were all road hauliers nationalised in 1947? And then at some point de-nationalised back to individual private firms?

Hi
It looks that way, except that I can't see the smaller, local companies getting rolled up.
What is interesting is the apparent hiding of the "one corporation" by havinng different "brands". I had a friend at school whose father was a local manager for Pickfords I'm sure they competed with BRS for some jobs (heavy lifting for instance) though I don't think BRS ever entered the house move market.
