Are there many Windows 7 users here? I have just been given a free upgrade to Windows 10 by Microsoft (praise their holy name). It fairly speeds up the page loading on my laptop. So far so good.

I have been running Windows 10 since its launch. Upgrade from 8.1.
I have no real issues with it. Somethings that perhaps one had got used to on previous versions are not there but on the whole it runs OK.
I have Office 2016 365, which seems to prefer Windows 10.
A lot of naysayers with regard to Microsoft, but they gave us a system that allows common communication/sharing around the world.
We have friends who baulk at MS costs and promote operating systems like Linux/etc. But for me, I just need to switch it on run good software, I use Word, Outlook, Excel and the seen to be believed Access Database (For our business) Also Adobe Photoshop and a few specialised programs that deal with Embroidery and Long Arm Quilting.
P.S. I ran MS Dos and Windows 3.1, so that ages me somewhat. |

Another former DOS and Win 3.1 user here. I've gone through all the Windows versions over the years and currently run:
Win 10 (my laptop)
Win 8.1 (O/H's laptop though soon to be upgraded to Win 10)
Win 7 (main PC) which has all my photo eding and DTP software on it
Win 7 (backup PC 1 - a mirror of main PC)
Win Vista (retired PC)
Win 8.0 was a disaster as far as I was concerned so the upgrade to 8.1 coulldn't come soon enough and even that wasn't much better. Win 10 is a great improvement and is fast, stable and doesn't have too many irritating features. _________________ David

I'm running Win7 but hate its confusing file/library structure and also hate its incompatibility with an older XP machine. As I understand it Win8 was really designed for tablets and people didn't mind hours of guessing where they'd hidden lots of the available functions. Win10 sounds as if it is Win8 with a slightly more Win7 interface.
I have no intention of "upgrading" to Win10.

But where are the games on Windows 10? I don't use them a lot but when the weather is foul occasionally. I haven't uploaded yet and remain with Windows 7 which does everything I need. |

I run win 10. The laptop upgraded itself from win7 without me telling it to. When first upgraded it was hopeless and slow, but follwing the first patch seems to work OK. The games are hidden deep in there - took me about 2 hours to find them and put a link on task bar. I have actually now forgotten how I did it (age).
Like others I started with DOS, then win 3.1 |

I've got a bundle of un-opened DOS 6 and Windows 3.1 on 3 1/2" floppies if anybody wants one.

I have windows 8.1 and have not yet upgrade to 10 although it reminds me every time I switch on. I think my laptop may be on the way out anyway as it only works when it is plugged into the mains. Whenit is off mains I always get "this page cant be displayed" coming up. It is only 2 years old but maybe upgrading to 10 might help. I don't know. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

On mine it's 'All Apps' in the start menu then scroll to 'Microsoft Solitaire Collection'. _________________ David

Interesting and I would like to upgrade my laptop but it will not because of a common update failure on SP1 800BO100 I have had for 3 years or so on my Windows Professional 7.
Looked and tried all the forum and help solutions without success and until now its not really bothered me.
As my HP Probook laptop at almost 5 yrs old now is probably on its way out then I may just wait till I get another. Original battery still lasts 3+ hours though
How long does IT last these days? - not long compared to old cars
Disillusioned with MS and wonder if W10 will end up like W7 on a new laptop _________________ Rover P2

The thing that kills PCs these days is mostly Windows - software that bloats over time and uses up more and more hardware resources. Experimenting with the many flavours of Linux may be worthwhile, hell if I can do it anyone can! I had an old Windows XP box sat doing nothing, perfectly good in its day but constant "updates" from Micro$haft and the need for ever more sophisticated anti-malware solutions slowed it to an impossible crawl. Tried the popular Ubuntu, but that used up too much in the way of resources. Then I tried lightweight Puppy, and by heck it flies with that! Still not entirely what I'm looking for, but there are plenty of Linux options to try and experimentation costs only a few blank CD or DVD discs, indeed more recent hardware will be able to boot from USB drives and cut even that minimal cost down to size. If you have a little time to play with this stuff the potential is there to extend the life of old computers WAY beyond what the big manufacturers would like |

I ' upgraded?' both my PC's to W10 & both are now back on W7 after many hours & swear words. IMHO W10 is a load of rubbish intended for touch screen lap tops & kids playing High end games. Luckily I still had my laptop which has W7Pro so I could keep up with what I needed. Microsoft were very careful in not pushing the fact that the roll back they supplied was only within the first 30 days - It takes more than 30 days to assess if it's what you want.
It also installs updates without say so & then interrupts whatever you are doing to have the machine restarted while you sit & twiddle your fingers.
I could go on....but won't. From running a computer with machine code in the 80s through all the progression of windows I have never been so disappointed. If I'm around long enough to get to the point where the only Windows is 10(as it's the last one that won't be too long) I will be another Linux immigrant. Rant over, sorry,JD. _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible
