I am so pleased for you , Rick. Well done indeed!.
The Pilot sounds and goes great now. ( I just hope the electronic distributor that I have fitted to my '49 TC works as it should because it was one that had been designed specifically for it.!) It could be that in your case, a previous owner just fitted what he could find and hoped for the best. ?
From what I could see in the video the old cap looked pretty chewed up. I can only think the rotor arm was incorrect and was coming into contact with the brass terminals in the cap. I believe they shouldn't actually touch; there should be a small air gap. |

It was a complete eFire elec ign distributor sold by a Ford V8 specialist specifically for the car and all the flathead V8s, not just a conversion to modify an original dizzy. It had only been on the car for 12-18 months or so, and hadn't done much mileage. Wiring had been altered as per the fitting instructions, so it should all have been fine.
The cap with the burnt contacts is the new cap included with the kit, same for the rotor arm I showed, all part of the fit-and-forget unit ... I'm sure some installations work just fine, but marrying up 70+yr old 6v electrics to modern electrickery isn't always a happy union.
All the problems I've had with different vehicles over the last 12-18 months or so have been caused by modern "upgrades" or poor repro parts, perhaps a subject for a separate video sometime. I wouldn't touch this stuff with a bargepole tbh unless I yearned for ultimate bhp from a given engine, which I don't.
