Did anyone here watch last night's programme about the restoration of the Flying Scotsman?
I did and enjoyed it despite the programme only being 30 minutes long.
There is quite a debate going on as to whether the locomotive should have been painted as it was in 1922 - Apple Green and black.
I think the locomotive looks superb in the British Railways livery and with it's last number 60103.
That was when the A1/A3 pacifics were at their best - developed and honed after 60 years of service.
Your opinions please. _________________ Starting Handle Expert

Hi
I've put links for it in the Scotsman thread on the Links board.

I was very disappointed to see that this historic locomotive was not returned to its condition at birth. Fitted with Kylchap blast pipe, double chimney and deflectors it just looks like an old thing that has had a few pragmatic "improvements".
A bit like looking under the bonnet of old cars and finding an alternator has replaced an original dynamo.
Why spend a lot of money restoring something old just to make it look half its real age?

I, too, was disappointed to see it restored to BR livery, even though that's how I remember it. Sadly it was never bright and shiney when I saw it back in the fifties/sixties!
The LNER Apple Green would have been more appropriate, not only because Flying Scotsman is more well known as 4472 than 60103, but also because it will be kept clean and polished as it was in LNER hands - I bet heads will roll if it is ever presented in typical BR condition! |

I must admit I wasn't that impressed with the programme itself, though I guess it might be down to having to cram it all in to such a short timeslot. I was surprised that there was no mention of the crowd issues they had during it's run, with idiots standing on the track to take photos. A small piece in the paper today suggests that the difficulties caused by those people cost Network Rail £60,000 in claims for late trains which had to be held or diverted. I imagine it would have tainted the programme though, so perhaps will make it easier to watch again in a few years.
I didn't think it was anywhere near as good as "Chuffed to Bits" (the programme about building Tornado), which was also only 30 minutes but seemed to make better use of it. The latter though is one that I'd like to see an extended version of. |

Well I for one, am glad to see the old lady restored to how I remember her.
As an avid spotter, in the 60's, I remember the german style smoke deflectors going on to some A3's, including Scotsman. She always had, in my memory, the double chimney, banjo dome and 60103. She was of course, wartime matt black for the first proving runs, and I have no doubt that after a few years a colour change will happen again. Anyway, whatever colour she is, let's just be glad she is back on the railways again. |
