Does anyone know anything about PECO( Performance Equipment Company Ltd) of Liverpool?. I have a full page ad. from the Motor magazine but the company seems to have faded during the 60's. |

Peco exhaust boosters were very popular in the late 50's early 60's. They were an oval box with two chrome tailpipes. Whether they did anything or not I don't know, they were supposed to increase power and improve economy, but they sounded good on a side valve six. |

I fitted a Peco system to my first car, a 1962 Mini Traveller, it doubled the acceleration and top speed...
There's a 'To Let' sign on their premises in Google Street View dated September 2014 so it looks like they've gone under again, the previous time was in July 2008. _________________ David

What was the top speed before you fitted the Peco?

Half what it was afterwards...
I sold the car after it failed its MOT then one day about two months later, when I was working in Bath, I heard an unmistakable sound and rushed to the window to see - yes, that's right, a Peco exhaust with a Mini Traveller attached. _________________ David

I fitted one to my Riley Elf in 1966. The tail pipes weren't long enough to clear the boot so the noise inside the car was horrendous. Off it came and extensions (actually copper from my uncle's plumbing business) were welded on. Made the right noise but no difference to the performance that I could detect.
A few weeks later I was parking the car up for the night in said plumbers yard as I had been drinking and wouldn't drive (it was on a car park adjacent to the yard gates), caught the Peco on a protruding metal plate that secured the gates and pulled the whole exhaust off. An original exhaust was fitted when I was sober the following day. I was ribbed about that incident for 30 years until said uncle passed away. |

I fitted a Peco exhaust system, for my late step dad. It was on a 850 mini, with single upswept tailpipe, in the centre of the car. It did sound good and noticeably upped the performance a bit.
I remember the old exhaust booster. It had twin tailpipes, one in line with the car's tailpipe, and the other was in line with a cone in the rear of the body. This was supposed to give an element of extraction, from the ram air through the cone. They did sound quite good, but I doubt improved performance at all. |
