Before moving to Canada I had not come across the US/Can/ and I believe NZ and Aus design of towbars.

http://www.curtmfg.com/part/13138

In a recent discussion with someone who imported a Land Rover from the UK, it was said that the US etc design wasn't allowed in Europe and Vice Versa.

For me, the US/ design has huge advantages because of the ease in which various ball sizes, height adjustment and things like towing rings, bike racks etc can be fitted........ plus when not need there is not that shin destroying thing stuck out of the back.

I haven't delved the regs, anyone know the legal aspect ?

In Australia they are sold as Reese Hitches. The ball and it's bracket can be pulled out after removing a locking pin, but very few people seem to bother to remove the end.

In Western Australia we have strict rules regarding towing. Every car has a maximum towing capacity that must not be exceeded. My Jeep can legally tow 2100kg. Larger vehicles (Toyota Land Cruisers etc.) go up to 3500kg. I think these rules apply in every Australian state.

I don't know about UK regs.

We also have weight/towing rules. On our SUV the ball is more out than in. but on the truck we use the trailer much more, either on the road or around the property, it also has a drop feature because the off road trailer is much higher.
