Can I ask you all for advice on a non motoring subject, please?

Which make of gold paint would you use on iron ornamental gates?
I have tried all the "big" name paints with fairly poor results despite good preparation. The finish looks artificial or gaudy and does not last long.

I have Googled the subject but the same names come up.
I did ask the groundsman of one of the local big country houses last year and he uses sheets of gold leaf.

"His" gates look beautiful but I am not in the same league as aristocracy or country squire! He also told me that he coats the black paint with copal and I may try that.

Any recommendations?

Thank you.

There is a product called 'Guilder's Paste'. The one that I have used is made in the USA by 'Baroque Art'. I have used it on a variety of surfaces, but merely tested it on wrought iron. It works well, goes a long way, but would need a lacquer coat to protect the finish. As it is available in a range of colours, artistic effects can be created.

My daughter (in the USA) uses it for very artistic effects on hand-cast chess pieces.

There might be a U.K. equivalent. The USA one is available in the U.K.

Thank you very much Dane. I hadn't heard of this before but it is available direct from Amazon UK and I have ordered the "Antique Gold" variety this afternoon.

Perhaps too late for this project.

But interesting.

Thank you Peter.

The cost is not going to break the bank so I am going to order this product as well and the universal sealer recommended in the advert.

I would guess, as with many products, one has to try it and await the results.
