Afternoon all,

My A40's been mentioned before, but are there any other Mk1 or Mk2 owners to be found here? Maybe you had one when they were still a common sight?

Was it just a re-hashed A35 in a modern body, or was it genuinely a good car in its own right?

Always liked the look of these, though I've never driven one. Didn't the Mk1 have an odd braking system? Hydraulic fronts and cable operated rears, I think.

Yep, the Mk1 has the same braking system (bar drum size?) and engine as the A35, and equally tuneable ...

I passed my test in '59 in an A40. There was a really quick A40 driven by a doctor from the (I think) Carlisle area in the 60s? Doc Shepherd won the Saloon Car championship in 1960 in one.

I passed mine in the A40 too, albeit a few years later Wink (Dec 1987 to be precise).

I had a Mk1, dreadful car. Mind you the cable brakes were handly because you could use the handbrake to take up slack in the system and get a bit more bite! Laughing

I owned a 948cc A 40 back in the mid 1970's.

The fuel consumption was a marvel compared to my previous car [a Vauxhall Cresta PC, 3.3 litre 6 pot]

Smile

Also, back in the early 1990's, whilst on a 'holiday' at a farm near Torrington, Devon, whilst wandering around, found a heavily overgrown secluded little valley.

In the bottom were the remains of a couple of of Bedford truck chassis....and an Austin A40...obviously dumped there.

Whilst the body shell was pretty far gone, I did manage to retrieve some odd small items.....pedal rubbers, wiper mechanism, some locks and badges, etc....anything that could be hidden in a Tesco bag, or the then-wife's handbag? The farmer disclaimed all knowledge, even though the land was his....dunno if he'd even been down there, it was a bit of a scramble.

Still got the pedal rubbers......just in case I need them....

Observing several ladies handbags over the years, makes me wonder why, in the possession of such, you didn't smuggle out the engine and gearbox ? Smile

I've had my 1960 mk1 for nearly 10 years now - it was my first car aged 16 in the summer of 2007! Not been on the road for a couple of years due to other projects taking over but it should be returning in the next couple of months!

Mick Cave had a very fast A40 in the 60s too, Downton prepared if I remember correctly, that gave the Ford opposition a very hard time in period club racing. I still enjoy the sound of a tuned A series engine.
