Prescott Hill Climbs French and Italian motoring festival

A celebration of French and Italian cars, music and entertainment

On the weekend of Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 May 2017, the eleventh annual pageant of French motoring excellence – La Vie en Bleu – takes place at Prescott Hill Climb, Gotherington in Gloucestershire – home of the Bugatti Owners' Club. This spectacular two day event has always been a firm favourite in the motoring calendar, and this year will be no exception. Last year ‘La Vito Rossa’ was introduced to also celebrate everything Italian!

Prescott Hill Climb will once again be transformed into a celebration of fine French and Italian automobiles, themed entertainment, musicians, dancers, actors and trade stalls.

This year the event will feature more French and Italian content on the track with special competition classes available for French and Italian marques. A round of the Ferrari Hillclimb Championship is one of the stars on the Saturday. Fans of British cars will also be well catered for with a special class for ERA cars. There will also be non-competitive runs by a LaFerrari and a Bugatti Veyron, plus the new Bugatti Chiron will hopefully make an appearance!

Visitors to Prescott will be in for a real treat, when the ‘Beast of Turin’ roars into action. The Fiat S76, known as the Beast of Turin is the one surviving example of a pair of land speed record contenders the Italian automaker built before WWI. The Beast of Turin’ was built in 1910 with the express intention of beating the land speed record, held at the time by Blitzen-Benz. Its 28.5-litre Fiat S76 engine was capable of providing an impressive 300bhp - enough to propel the car to 116 mph, and a one-mile land speed record, in 1911. After WWI Fiat dismantled one of the two impressive machines to prevent rival manufacturers obtaining its technical secrets, while the other one was purchased by Russian aristocrat Boris Soukhanov. In 2003, engineer enthusiast and current owner Duncan Pittaway discovered the remains of one chassis in Australia, and eventually united it with the surviving S76 engine from the other car. Duncan will be firing up the beast, to compete during the weekend.

Also in attendance is the Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta chassis #2735 - One of the most famous and recognizable 250 SWB’s in the world, formally raced by Stirling, Graham Hill and Innes Ireland (Sunday only).

Aside from the impressive array of vehicles both on and off track, there will be a whole raft of entertainment to keep the whole family amused. Gracing the main stage will be Roman Marek, the purveyor of ‘cool swing known throughout Europe and the USA for his performance in the hit musical “Rat Pack ­ Live from Las Vegas”. Roman will bring the style and panache of crooner Frank Sinatra to Prescott as he performs “That’s Amore” to “Mambo Italiano” plus many more.

Plus we welcome the return of Oyster Opera - the magnificent duo regularly performs at celebrity parties, including that of Sir Elton John. Beware you might be invited to waltz along with the soprano to Verdi's Brindisi, be enveloped by a smouldering Carmen, or have a charming Pavarotti serenade you on one knee through the paddock!. Plus La Swing – a jazz quintet performing French Chanson, Gypsy Jazz and 30’s Swing to create a sophisticated French cafe vintage feel.

Alongside the roving accordion player, and popular stilt walkers will be the stunning Vegas Showgirls swapping their feathers for flapper dresses and performing Charleston routines to French inspired Electro Swing songs as well as regular Can Can performances throughout the weekend.

As Nick Mason, Drummer from Pink Floyd, and avid car collector said “The event is quintessentially British - a mini Goodwood Festival of Speed set in the glorious Cotswolds. It’s a club motor sport at its best, where visitors can mingle with the cars, speak to the drivers, and watch rare historic vehicles to modern day supercars being pushed to their limits”.

First car on the track approx. 8.30am both days. Scheduled finish time around 5.30pm.

Bugatti Chiron at Prescott.

The eleventh annual pageant of French motoring excellence ‘La Vie en Bleu’ will take place once again at Prescott Hill Climb on the Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 May 2017. The two day event has always been a firm favourite in the motoring calendar, and this year will be no exception.

We are delighted to announce that the spectacular new Bugatti Chiron is set to make its first-ever appearance at Prescott at the end of May. The Bugatti Chiron is the World’s most powerful, fastest, most luxurious and exclusive production super sports car. The 1479bhp hypercar is the successor to the legendary Veyron, and will be carrying out demonstration runs at the historic Prescott hillclimb over the course of the weekend.

Monegasque ace Louis Chiron was one of the leading lights in pre-war motor racing, winning a number of Grands Prix in the 1920s and 30s, including the 1931 Monaco GP at the wheel of a Bugatti Type 51. He also took victory in that year’s French GP and, in 1933, the Spa 24 Hours.

The car now named in his honour is capable of 261mph, and can accelerate from 0-124mph in less than 6.5 seconds; from rest, it will get to 186mph in only 13.6 seconds! It boasts a monstrous 8-litre W16 engine with four turbochargers, and each of the 500 that are set to be built will cost a cool £1.9 million. As the home of the Bugatti Owners Club, Prescott will be the perfect setting for the Chiron and, with the famous Molsheim marque always being well represented at La Vie en Bleu; it will be joined on the hill by an array of vintage Bugattis, a Veyron Supersport and its 1990’s cousin the EB110.

Plus new for 2017 - ‘Chiron – The Man –‘ opening at the Bugatti Trust on May 27th is an exhibition dedicated to the life and racing career of one of Ettore Bugatti’s most famous works drivers: Louis Chiron. Hugely successful in the 1920s and 1930s, racing Bugattis including the types 22, 35, 51 and 53, he had an extraordinary life which saw him compete in GP racing up to the age of 55. The exhibition will chronicle the start of his career and progress to becoming an official and celebrated team member of the Écurie Bugatti. The Bugatti Trust exhibition will include original GP cars from the period, photographs of seminal moments of his career and historic racing memorabilia. A small additional display will celebrate the renowned Bugatti Queen Hellé Nice who was a racing contemporary of Chiron.

Last year the popular event expanded to include ‘La Vita Rossa’, celebrating all things Italian as well as French – not only via the cars, but also musicians, dancers, entertainers and visiting car clubs. This year promises to feature even more French and Italian content on the hill with special competition classes for French and Italian marques, plus a round of the Ferrari Hillclimb Championship will be taking place on the Saturday.

The paddock will be adorned with numerous iconic classic and supercars from the Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta chassis #2735 - One of the most famous and recognizable 250 SWB’s in the world, formally raced by Sir Stirling Moss, Graham Hill and Innes Ireland (Sunday only) to a 1969 Lamborghini Miura S, which at the time of its launch was the fastest production car in the world with a top speed of 280kph, and acceleration from 0-100kph in 6.7 seconds. Designed by Marcello Gandini for Bertone, the two-seater vehicle with its central V12 engine and fascinating body redefined the concept of a sports car. The Miura S on display was originally delivered to the 1960s supermodel ‘Twiggy’ and in her chosen colour scheme.

In addition to activities in the paddock and on track taking to the skies above will be the stirring sounds of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Dakota (Sat) and Spitfire (Sun). Fans of British racers, meanwhile, will be treated to a special class for ERA voiturettes. Six are already confirmed to be competing including the iconic ex-Raymond Mays R4D – the most celebrated chassis in the marque's history. ERA R4D was built by English Racing Automobiles in the 1930s, designed to compete with the highly successful Bugatti’s and Maseratis. In spite of its success, it was the only D-Type ever built, but accumulated a formidable reputation, and competition records in its various guises. ERA founder Raymond Mays set numerous pre-war records in the R4D, including ones at Prescott hill climb, Shelsley Walsh, Brighton Speed Trials and Brooklands Mountain Circuit. The vehicle remains one of the most successful pre-war competition cars of its time.
