Ruins some nice cars.

Some pre war cars (I am thinking of 1939 Sunbeam Talbot) used what they called "pearl essence". I wonder if you can still get it?

In 1931 a Rolls-Royce P11 appeared at the motor show in Pearlescant turquoise over nearly white I think it was. They'd achieve the colour and the pearlescent finish using ground up fish scales in the paint and then lacquering over the top. However I agree, modern metallics look very out of place and the old ones completely different.

Motivated by the notion of different paint finishes on older cars I did a little research into pearlescent. It is still available but is more expensive than ordinary metallic; on the other hand, it is vastly superior. The metal particles are replaced with ceramic crystals...no ground fish scales these days!

I found a chemical formula for pearlescent; NaMg3ALSi3O10F2. Shocked

I put some checkered go-faster stripes on my 1934 Morris 8.
Just about managed 45mph. But that was back in 1962.

Hello... haven't "seen you" on here for a while ?

Are you sure you had the "go faster stripes" on the correct sides, reversing them can cause drag and a reduction in top speed. Laughing

Good to hear from you pigtin. Said Morris 8 appears on one of many motoring story pages on the main site, provided by Don a few years back: http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/prewarcars.htm.
