Took mine for some petrol ready for the trip to Llangollen on Saturday. The cashier said "Nice Cavalier, mate." Still, nice of her to comment at all, and it wasn't a bad guess as the Mk1 Cavalier had a productionised version of the front of my car, and one of the early prototypes had a front that is noticeably similar to mine.

Yesterday I took the Firenza home ready to go out to Llangollen this morning, only to find that while it was fine the day before, the thermostat was suddenly sticking closed, and the car get very warm until it finally opened. So last night I had to quickly whip out the thermostat, which meant making a gasket. It was still leaking a little (I need to add some sealant to my emergency spares in the boot) but it hadn't lost much by the time I got there, and is now tucked up in the shed ready for a new one.

I hate doing jobs in an emergency, but I couldn't risk it sticking again and having to do it on the side of the road which would have been worse. It's given the odd indication over the last two or three years, creeping up a little higher than usual but then settling, but as it always sorted itself I've left well alone. Serves me right really.

We took one of the Hillmans to a local Retro run today, lots of cars of various ages on display. It was good to get out in the sunshine.

Me too! My navigator pulled out at the last minute so I just followed a very nice Austin Ascot equipped with both driver and navigator.

Not the cars today - the garage. Filled three wheelie bins, as well as a car full of scrap metal to weigh in. And there's still some stuff to be chucked next bin cycle.

Yes, it was the Retro Fundraising show. We didnt do the run, just the static display at the new venue. We had a look at the Consul, there were a lot of nice cars on show.

No good deed goes unpunished. Replaced a heater hose that had sprung a pinhole leak (and turned out to be going quite spongey throughout) on the Princess and it rewarded my efforts by blowing the head gasket. Oh well, at least the O-Series is a nice easy engine to work on. I've almost got the head ready for the machine shop now, just a clean down to do when I have time.

I've done the head gasket on this car once before several years ago and I'd had no warning that anything was amiss until checking coolant level on getting home after replacing the heater hose to be met with this soup that was nice pale blue coolant when I set off on my errands.

Fortunately I've a friend with some spare valve shims and the proper cam locking tool so we can even set the valves properly when everything is rebuilt, providing the machine shop finds nothing amiss with the head, of course.

After many weeks not being able to get down the yard to the Commer I managed to get down there for an hour today. Topped up the fuel and gave her another run of 20 mins on tickover to get the thermostat running, she now starts first time, reads good oil pressure and all the pipework, radiator and thermostat housing go hot as they are supposed to.

First booked in show is in two weeks time.

Fitted a pair of nice new front springs from Jones springs to the Morris 8 today, after breaking one by hitting a pothole on the way home from the Father's Day meeting at Nuffield place home of William Morris founder of Morris cars.

Having done our duty for charity, we were wafting our way home through the forest when we got caught in the most horrendous storm. No escape, and we were reduced to driving at 10 mph because visibility was so poor. Yet when we arrived home it was dry as a bone. The "swimming pool" will be drained today, the seats having been taken out on arrival..
