Here's an interesting subject, the requisitioning and subsequent use of civilian cars by local authorities & government during the war effort - in this specific enquiry that arrived via email yesterday, the use of Alvis cars, and whether any photos survive:

---

Hi

I am researching an unusual area of old car history - specifically cars that were donated to the War Effort in WWII.

It appears that some of these vehicles were converted into Mobile Canteens often manned by the W.R.V.S., the (Womens Royal Voluntary Service)

These vehicles were often sent into bombed residential areas during the Blitz to feed and refresh people who had lost their homes.

My researches suggest that some Alvis cars ended up in this wonderful service and I am hoping someone may have a photograph of such a vehicle?

For interest and to show the sort of thing I am looking for, I have attached a picture found on the net showing an ancient Rolls Royce car in the same role.

Nick Simpson

Technical Advisor,

Alvis Owner Club.

I wonder if this ARP fire tender might be an Alvis? It's not an SS Jaguar and I don't think it's a Bentley, Lagonda or Jensen.

I don't know if this will be of help, Rick but I haven't seen an Alvis with this type of wheel trim. Looks pre War to me but can't really say for sure.

Ray,

I'm pretty sure the car in the photo has proper Ace discs on wire wheels held on with two ear spinners (as below) rather than the eBay trims.
