We have just removed the windscreen from our wartime Commer truck as it is cracked, the door windows have been replaced with perspex at some point too.
I am trying to find someone nearby (Somerset area) who could supply and cut the glass but as of yet no luck.
Any of you chaps have any experience getting glass cut for vehicles? _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Hi
I wonder if someone at Winkleigh could help, after all they are in the west country and might well get their glass somewhere down there. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Rootes75,
Can't you order the size you want from a windscreen replacement shop.
Over here I had a new windscreen cut for my Austin Seven and also my Chrysler just by taking the damaged ones in to a windscreen replacement shop as patterns. Then they either cut it, or got it cut and it only took a couple of days. The edges were finished very nicely. All smooth so that you can't get cut by it. Surely there must be something similar in the UK.

Its weird being the same age as old people.

Have you looked for plant glass firms, usually onsite service. |

Autoglass?
A good local glazier ought to be able to supply automotive thickness, laminated glass cut to size?
[It's nice if the edges are nicely beveled and smoothed too?]
Autoglass will also etch a neat little kite mark in one corner for you as well.
But it may cost?? _________________ Dellow Mk2, 1951 built, reg 1952.

Any local glass supplier will be able to supply flat laminated or tempered glass cut to size.

From what I understand, glass is first cut to size and the edges ground after that has been done it is tempered. Curved glass is more complicated. |

Thanks Gents.
Its all flat glass and I have removed them to use as templates. I have had a google search of local glass companies and they dont list doing this sort of thing. But, a phone call talking to someone in person could change all that. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

I have found a supplier of cut to suze laminated glass about 5 miles from where I work.
It notes laminated glass is most used in shop windows and schools, I take it that it would be fine for a windscreen? _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Laminated glass is my preference for auto windscreens. It must [I believe?] be between 4 & 6 mm thick.
Your glazier will know what thickness is permitted?

I've had a few glasses made over the years in the Midlands but on last order I was told the 5mm laminated, which is the preferred original size, was becoming very hard to source as a key maker had packed up, presumably low demand. So you'll probably need to accommodate 6mm in future. _________________ Daimler Fifteen 1934 (now sold)

So, I have had a quote back from a local glazer for the door windows on the Commer.
Laminated glass, bevelled edged and cut to my template. Its £112 for the pair, do you think that's reasonable? _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |
