When Water Companies (Boards as they were) laid cast iron pipes in the ground, apparently they would attach a bag of scrap magnesium to the pipe to delay corrosion.
"It acts as a sacrificial anode which reacts with oxygen more readily than iron so when corrosion occurs, the magnesium corrodes instead of the iron."

Had to look this up and it appears it was a standard practice -- interesting stuff. As you say, pretty much the same principle as me hanging my old socks and silica gel!
Seems they still do it except for now it's a magnesium block with wires. |
