Hi All,
Can anyone tell me what modern day antifreeze should I use in my 1965 Mk 1 Humber Sceptre with an ali head.
Many thanks

The antifreeze that you need is ethylene Glycol and these days it is normally green in colour. You could also use Bluecol which as it's name suggests is blue in colour.

Mistakenly mixing other colours can clog up the cooling system. Shocked

OAT (Organic Acid Technology) is RED.

Also avoid HOAT (Hybrid Organic Acid Technology) which is YELLOW or ORANGE.

On the wall of my garage I have written a warning to self " DON'T USE OAT or HOAT antifreeze"

Shocked

Another [valid, in my view] point to consider is, if one has pets that wander in & around one's vehicles? Cats, dogs, rabbits, wedgewoggz, you name it.
Antifreeze is sweet tasting and highly toxic if sipped...something dogs and cats can be prone to doing. [It's probably why some Italian wineries were caught adding antifreeze to their wine, decades ago?]

Spillages can prove lethal.

''Thinking mechanics'' might want to use one of the many pet-safe antifreezes on the market instead??
Yet another consideration [for those more ''well heeled,'' perhaps?} is to use what I believed Rolls Royce once used in their products [before they became, ''something else??'], that is Fernox Alphi-11 antifreeze.

https://fernox.com/product/antifreeze-protector-alphi-11-5-litre/

Although intended for domestic central heating systems, this stuff is possibly ideal for older vehicles with a mixture of metals in their cooling systems.
It is also safe to leave puddles and drips lying around where there are small children.
Just a thought????

For the past 15 years I have used Morris oils MEG Antifreeze and coolant with excellent results and I also add a bit of their Ankersol anti corrosion fluid which turns it to an almost fluorescent green, absolutely brilliant for identifying leaks.
Since using this I have never seen large brown deposits on draining systems for any reason. It really does do what it claims.
These guys excel in vintage and classic products and if you are a club member, might even offer a bit of discount.

Is 'Mono Ethylene Glycol' (MEG) the same as simply 'Ethylene Glycol' ?

Dunno
But to add to the mix, so to speak, what about using Propylene Glycol instead?
Not quite as effective at 'heat transfer' as ethylene glycol, but one heck of a lot less toxic in concentrated form.
I'm not sure an engine not prone to overheating issues would notice the difference in normal driving? {Which differs considerably from ''test conditions?''}

That got me thinking (rare thing Razz ). Perhaps this is a better solution (pardon the pun) to the toxic element in antifreeze. It seems to mix with all types. Wink

Is there a U.K. equivalent.?

Fernox Alphi-11 is one example. As mentioned above, it complies with housing regulations regarding toxicity [far more stringent than automotive regulations in this respect]

Not cheap, when compared to stuff like Comma ethylene glycol, etc...

This is also sold by the newly reborn version of Fuzz Townshend's Classic oils company.

https://motorspirit.co.uk/product-category/category/coolants-anti-freezes/classic-anti-freezes/

Re-branded to align with the new style of classic car ownership brigade, AKA Gucci handbag brigade....n doubt?? Certainly the new name makes it harder to find on google.

There will be many who would balk at 70 hard earned pounds no matter how environmentally friendly it may be. Shocked

Perhaps just be careful not to spill any of the toxic stuff. Wink

Incidentally, I have beed stopped from posting anything with a pound sign. It keeps changing to a question mark.

? indeed Confused

What platform are you using? I don't have a Euro sign key unless someone knows a key combination that does it.

If I need a symbol that?s not on the keyboard, I cut and paste it from somewhere else, quicker that trying to look up keyboard strokes.

I still can't stop the l.s.d. symbol turning into a question mark.

I am not surprised because I am jinxed where electrical things are concerned. It may sound unlikely but it's sadly true.
Sad
