Now I think this is a very sensible start price for what looks like a nice project.

I have fond memories of a Ford Consul. A very competent car which I remember being pretty comfortable over long distances.

The temptation would be to buy it for as low as possible and get it running.

With a spruce up it could then be sold on to someone willing to spend money on it.

If the McPherson strut turrets are shot I would walk away. Another area that suffers from rot is the rear spring hangers.

Am I right in thinking these also had a ''weak'' rear axle? [When compared to the next models?}

Wow, ?1000 for a unknown non runner? I wish I hadn't sold mine for just ?35 back in 1978. It was MOTd, taxed and incredibly reliable. These were made of real metal. The wings were three times as thick as the floppy tin today's are made from. 261SKJ. I wonder it it survived? It was painted (not by me) in black and yellow tiger stripes. Very unique.

Current Ford prices I think this would make a good project.

Do I spy Mk1 A40 sidelights/turn signals?

Could be an interesting project although it'd really need seeing outside in daylight.

I don't remember the axles being weak. MY Dad's Consul must have done over 100,000 miles with no issues.

I am merely responding to something I recall someone saying on this forum about the weaker rear axles of earlier consuls/zodies/zephs...
I know very little about these larger Fords....only having serious contact with a Mk3 4 pot Zephyr to go by..breifly...in the 1970's...

Wear and tear in the column change linkage was a bit annoying but fairly easily fixed. More of a challenge was what happened to my Dad's car.

We were on holiday in Cornwall when some piston rings gave out. Dad spent a while under the car but soon had it sorted.

One odd thing that happened was when the output flange from the gearbox sheared off leaving the car stranded halfway up Anchor Hill,
just outside Woking. I remember it well because I was 12 years old and had just collected my new Falcon Black Diamond lightweight
racing bike from Bakers bike shop. My Dad had know Mr Baker for years and got a "trade" price.

I loved that bike. Very Happy

looks ok from the front, looks to be post 58 car so a lowline with more trim around the windscreens and lower roof, non std side lights although the no is lower than i would expect for a lowline.
could make a good car if underside is solid, most repair parts are available and the metal is thick so can be welded to in most cases.
i would expect it to go for more than the starting price as in parts worth that alone esp trim.
comfortable cruising cars for today pot holed roads, mine copes with the moors roads better than my modern car!
as for weak axles only of you hammer them and uprate the engine, leaking axle seal are the problem, easier to change the axle!
no more of a problem than any other 50's car though.

Between the 50s and 80s my Grandparents ran a small car breakers in the village. I recall when I was child in the mid 80's playing in Consuls such as this down in the the paddock. One in particular was black but my memory stands out that it had leopard print covers for the seats!!

I have the fondest memories of our green and white Consul.
My Dad bought if from a friend who had owned it from new with a low milage.
The car may have been regularly serviced but for some reason never, ever washed.!
It was unbelievably dirty but my brother and I spent an entire week end cleaning it inside and out.
By the time we had finished the Consul's paint and chrome shone like new.
I valeted the interior with amazing results.

Dad couldn't believe it!! Very Happy

well that consuls gear box went to ireland with my old consul as i damaged my gear box early in the 80's and someone said there was a consul at stileway so we spoke to the scrap yard owner and he said ?40 and we could have the box if we took it out, it was full of cobwebs but we pushed the car onto it's side and got it out of the car and it stayed in my car for over 10 years or so till i sold it in 94.
so it is a small world after all.
yes you are right it did have leopard skin seat covers, mine had tiger skin ones lol.
