The bonnet catches for my MG TC are attached by 8 x machine screws. They are a shallow dome head that measures 3/8". I cannot find anything with a head this shape and size.
Has anyone got a suggestion where I might source a supply? I have these three but I need 8 in total. Thread is not that important. The ones originally fitted were 2 BA but the ones shown here are BSF. I understand they were originally painted body colour.
As a last resort I could grind the shoulders off some 3/8" pan head screws ...but that would be a pain.  |

Thanks Dave. I should have said the holes are 3/16". Unfortunately, Accu seem to start at 1/4".
I expect I will have to fit metric.  |

Sorry, no. They are a roundhead screw. I wanted a mushroom head screw; a squashed roundhead, if you like.
I could fit metric mushroom head screws - they all look the same - or else these chrome plated pan heads would do the trick but perhaps they are a bit obvious.?

If you don't own a lathe, could you reshape the pan heads into the shape you want using a drill held in a vice and a file? This will of course remove the playing which will make the paint stick better. |

Yes that is more like it!
I found them elsewhere but being pedantic I dislike the way they seem to have a rounded edge finish to the perimeter. There is a difference ........[img]https://i.postimg.cc/L4bLHg8d/0-14-png.webp[/img]

I do have a lathe but even so the idea of reshaping all 8 little screws is a bit much.!
I have ordered some metric mushroom head screws from Accu. Seeing as Abingdon chose to build these cars with a mix of metric and imperial fasteners I don't suppose it matters much.

That's my feeling. Unfortunately the originality police are only too willing to ridicule anyone who ventures from the path of righteousness. They, of course can only do that if you allow them to inspect your car. I have had MG enthusiasts come visit simply because they want to see how far I have strayed!
One chap went away with ruffled feathers only to later admit that it was my car and I could do as I pleased. Very big of him I thought ! |

The purchasing department at MG and every other manufacturer for that matter, would have been constantly sourcing the best deal for things like screws , its inevitable that mushroom head screws from different manufacturers would be slightly different!
Unless the Originality Police know for certain that say, in 1949 GKN supplied the screws, and from 1950 it was changed to Brookes and the difference is.......
Do the same Police insist that you shouldn't use sealed bearings; only open R&M are acceptable or not have PVC insulation under the cloth in the wiring loom

I really think it has gone too far. I say that because MGs were always modified for competition; right from the start owners have put their stamp on the cars and often (during Kimber's time) with the factory blessing.
If I had bought a car with many original features then I would choose to keep it that way...but it would be my choice. As it happens, there were very few original, usable or restorable parts and I think every day about how naive and trusting I was. Even what appeared to be a private sale turned out to be a dodgy dealer.

P.S. Although the Amal catches are probably original equipment, the screws that attach them to the bonnet sides are a motley collection; none of them complying with original specifications.
