Hi Rick,
Just in case you ever need a replacement front if you are ever taking big Dodge to Montana it will probably be there.

Hi
Can't you get a better scan on the street name? _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Hi
Silly me.
I mis-read your post as being in Carlisle.
Carlisle St on the other hand.
There is on off Soho Sq, But there is no post area on the sign which London normally had.
Preston, now under the bus station area (doesn't look right on old maps)
Leicester
Cardiff
Sheffield (doesn't look right on old maps) _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

I found this more interesting than the Old Car Quiz, but I failed just as miserably.
streetmaps.co.uk shows dozens of Carlisle Streets!
I'm pretty certain it's not London unless it's prior to 1941 which I think is too early for the photo.
The 'S' sign indicates a city, rather than a town or village (generally).
The style of the street sign might be a regional clue - note the superscript t in St.
It's a wide street or there wouldn't be room to turn that large lorry.
I'll keep looking! _________________ Mike - MVPeters at comcast.net

Hi
The building style looks to be city centre rather than ordinary residential
There seems to be a lot of NCOs and what do you think that rounded feature just beyond the radiator grill is. There is a tree behind the truck as well. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Hi
It is possible for a hastily written WAAF to look like WRAF if the first A was carelessly done.
Alternatively the writing may have been done much later by someone just using WRAF as a term or because they didn't know about the name change. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

The dark feature ahead of the grille, is the shadow on the back of the grille guard fitted to protect the grille and headlamps. I found this on ebay and the original photo arrived today.
It definitely says "WRAF" on the back, in pencil, but I suspect like you say it was in error by someone later.

We were lucky enough to find an original brushguard for the front of it and Rick has it on the shelf. Straightened out that bar on it yet Rick? |

Tell the blacksmith not to use is as a barbeque though.
If there are any weld spatter blobs on it - tell him to leave them as they are, as the one I have for my one ton is factory original with one coat of olive drab on top of the weld spatter. They were more concerned with strength than tidiness.
If you didn't need those driving lights, people would get out your way a lot faster with that brushguard in place. |

On the subject of the photo, I found myself with time on my hands so I had a look at some likely locations and unfortunately also have drawn a blank. I had a look through the postcode database file for anything called "Carlisle St" (or Carlisle Sq, just in case), and had a look on Google streetview. There are some similar buildings on the end of a Carlisle Street, but unfortunately nothing quite the same.
Of course, there are strong chances that the place has been redeveloped, maybe even losing the street name completely from current address databases.
For reference, in case anyone has some more old maps and fancies doing more research, this is the list of current (well, 2011) applicable places that I found:
Birmingham
Blackburn
Bradford
Keighley
Bolton
Belfast
Cardiff
Crewe
Goole
Gainsborough
Glasgow
Halifax
Barrow-in-Furness
Leicester
Pudsey / Stanningley
Manchester / Swinton
Gateshead
Newport (South Wales)
Oldham
Rochdale
Preston
Sheffield
Mexborough / Kilnhurst
Rotherham
Alderley Edge
Stoke on Trent
Newton Abbott
Hartlepool
London
Warrington / Stockton Heath
Wigan / Hindley |

I find it unlikely that in Scotland, only Glasgow is big enough to qualify as having a Carlisle Street.
Permission to borrow the image and spread it around a bit in case I can find someone there that recognises it?
Isn't it annoying that in period images of our vehicles, people are always standing in front of them, blocking out RAF serial numbers and the like? |
