Hi

I had large crystals ontop of the battery and then some extra ones on the neg terminal, the positive terminal is a little white, but not so bad, what causes this?

Any way to stop it?

Cheers

Dave

Hi Dave,
Pour some really hot (just short of boiling) water over the battery to get rid of the crystals. Coat the terminals with petroleum jelly before connecting it up to the car

The crystals are acidic so remove the battery from the car before doing it as they will rot the metalwork

I was always told to use baking soda as an alkaline neutralises acid
Pour BS over the terminals and then wash off with hot water this way it wont attack metalwork.
Wire wool the terminals if they are good but if they are badly scored or chipped use a terminal post trimmer obtainable from Halfords
Then use Vaseline once all finished

As an addition to this post.

Nowadays, it is possible to buy Battery Terminal Grease, but we all know that Vaseline is just as good, and cheaper.

If any of the crystals have got onto the battery tray or anywhere else for that matter, neutralise, derust and protect.

If you want to stop it happening again, keeping the terminals covered with vaseline will help, but another alternative is to convert to a negative earth system, and 12 volts at the same time....much more interesting than vaseline

Dare I post Billy Connolleys old joke about vaseline? (if I can remember it all!) Laughing

Hi

Sorry yeah Furry! hehe

Anyway I will do the vasaline route, as I want it 6V, 12V is not orriginal, and I prefer to have it orriginal.

Cheers

Dave

Hi
An alternative to Vaseline is copper grease which is what seems to be used and recommended these days, but then again that may not look right if you are trying for original.
