|
|
Hello,
I am restoring this late 40`s or early 50`s living van, it is 22ft long on a ex military dyson chassis and I believe it was travelled by a showman called W Goodman from Doncaster. A lot of structural work was carried out by a previous owner around ten years ago and it is in fairly good shape but I have no information as to a maker and can find nothing to identify it
.....Help?
Any help would be appreciated.

That is great Jonnie, good to see you are restoring it,(not a small job!!)
As regards Identification, I am a Member of the 'All the Fun of the Fair' Forum, where there is a section for 'Living Wagons', have you tried there?
Here is a link to the Main Forum Index:

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the messages and I have registered at the fun of the fair forums so I will try a post there. There must be someone out there who knew it when it travelled!
It is actualy a quite straightforward restoration the roof is good and dry, all the panels are good, it just needs a few odds and ends repairing, some tyres and a bit of paint.
The biggest problem is I have to restore the Scammell to tow it first and that requires quite a lot of attention

Interesting bit of news regarding this living van arrived yesterday evening. I'm hoping to get Elizabeth's phone number so that I can pass it on to Jonnie.

I was perusing your site last night and came across a forum entry from 17th
April 2008 from a person named Jonnie who was restoring a showmans living van
previously belonging to W Goodman from Doncaster. He was wanting further
information etc. I am the daughter of Bill Goodman and lived in the van for all
my childhood so you can imagine my shock and surprise when I read it.
I wondered if there was any way of contacting this person. I would appreciate
any help in doing so.

Just a quick update. After fifteen years doing the scammell and seven years work on the wagon I eventually got the show on the road at the back end of last year. I thought I'd share a quick pic, I hope you like it!

Made my day. Hats off to you Sir.
Did anything transpire with Mr. Goodman's daughter? |

Ok time to spil the beans..
After Rick kindly put us in touch I've kept Liz updated as and when I've made any progress with the wagon. It's been great having someone who actually lived in it to talk to as I've gone along to help me try and do a sympathetic restoration.
Liz sent me some lovely black and white pictures which I have framed and display in the wagon, she also told me her dad used to hang a gas mask by the side of the fire, she had no idea why but I got a gas mask and do the same, the only difference is I know why I do! It all adds to the atmosphere inside, which is wonderful by the way. I asked Liz about putting her dad's name on the wagon, unfortunately he passed away a while ago but she agreed saying "he'd love to know his name was still travelling the country".
It's been a long and fairly hard slog getting it to where it is, and it's still an ongoing work as I think it always will be, but it's been very worthwhile. It's a great match for the scammell and a lovely place to stay on the rally fields, I'm looking forward to a full as possible rally season this year which will be my first one in quite a few years as the scammell and wagon ate most of my spare time and cash!!
I'm letting Liz know the shows I intend to attend this year and hope at some point she can come and see for herself although I have sent her many pics over the last few years ..
Anyway that just about brings everything up to date, thanks to Rick for putting us in touch.
If anyone would like to see anymore pics of the wagon or scammell, let me know and I can post some...
Cheers,
Jonnie |
