My Traction used to have a "glass bowl ignition coil" I would like to find one again, preferably in 12V, anyone know of a supplier?
Thank you

I seem to recall they were fitted to 1930s M.G.s so you could try M.G. parts suppliers. They were known as 'oil coils'. I used to have one in the museum (ok shed then) but somebdy wanted it for their M.G. J2. They were long lasting because the oil kept them cool.

Greeney,

Runbaken of Manchester used make them. I have one on my Jaguar. I rather doubt if the are still in business. There is one on Ebay UK item 190251153687 sitting at £25 and no bids. Have a look and see if it's what you are looking for.

Hi Greeney

Just a slight word of caution, like you I try and get the original bits for my car, and aquired a NOS boxed original spec coil for the Morris 8. I have been running the engine on a modern lucas coil, and decided to fit the NOS one for a comparrison. The engine ran fine, but when I measured the coil's maximum output, it was about 30% lower than the modern one and was border line on passing the test an the analyzer.

The engine I ran it on had fresh plugs , new HT leads, condenser, points and had just been set up, so no big demand made on the coil hence in ran fine, get an engine where the plugs are a bit older or perhaps a little fouled, the mixture is not quite right, points worn etc combined with a coil that a bit weak and you may well problems in the form of a slight misfire or poor starting.
So if you do get hold of a glass coil it would be well worth getting a garage to measure its maximum output so you know its condition, and carry a modern spare around with you anyway.

Cheers

Dave

Thank you, I was wondering about that, I was going to fit the 123 ignition distributor too so I am sure a good spark would be important, I like the look though, maybe I could 'hide' the modern one Rolling Eyes

This is probably not relevant to a Citroen Traction but you can buy (at a high price) old style coils and not ruin the appearance of engine compartments with modern components.

Hmm they do look proper those oil coils don't they, I guess they were fitted for many years across a variety of cars? I wonder if commercial vehicles ever had them fitted too? does it mention anything in the book about lorry applications etc?

On the back page there are a few testimonials from people saying they have used it with success on vans and lorries, it also says in the blog that it is highly recommended for racing cars and heavy load vehicle because of its ability to give such a good spark compared to "normal metal ones"
I am going to put it on the R4 michelin van as a test because they are quite sensitive to weak coils Rolling Eyes
