Not being content with just having woodworm I noticed some oil on the side of the engine. I think that welding so close to the joint between block and head causes shrinkage, is this so? Also spot the crack in the head.

It's just not my weekend! I have not got any oil in the water.
I hope ukdave is having more luck with his 8.

Nic

Would anyone like to hazard a guess where the oil is coming from? There are no oilways to a SV head! Oh dear. But there is no blue smoke when it runs!!!!
Ihave just noticed that the nuts have not been disturbed except the one the horn mounts on. Did the previous owner undo one nut to mount the horn? Maybe he should hang up his stetson and spurs and go back to playing with leggo. Don't you just hate cowboys.

The welding can cause block face distortion so close to the top but it looks well done?

The head does not look like its leaking much at all although the crack may spread.

Are you sure the is coming from the joint as the paint film seems sound.

Hi Phil, I think this shows the block now I have given it a wipe,

I still do not know where the oil is coming from. I will just have to remove the head. If the crack gets worse so be it, I will have to get it welded. Is Urbanhurst ltd still running?

I think for peace of mind if nothing else, it'll be worth taking the head off for a gander inside. I had a multitude of cracks in the engine of the sidevalve Dodge and had them metal stitched, Lockstitch in Rochdale did them for me (plus they replaced a large section in the cylinder 'head' that had been previously 'repaired' using braze)

Work on the engine can be found here:

and the badly corroded head here:

It's still odd tho, as Nic points out these are no oil ways that high up, and the valve's are on the other side, so I'm guessing it must be exhaust driven?
I'll do an update today with my engine woe's!

Cheers Dave

Dave I have been told by the same guy that told me about the paint that oil can seep up the studs. The head will have to come off to see if the crack goes through. Waiting to here your woes.
