Hi
It says Richard Branson, has been on about getting the government involved, I would think he has more cash than the government at the moment!
Cheers

I like to see this plane fly, but, £80,000 a month????!!!!
What does it need to warrant that sort of money every month? _________________ Series 3 1972 LWB Truck Cab Pick Up. My daily drive. |

Hi
I believe a figure of £7000 for fuel per hour has been mentioned.
Enough about the costs..
What about the display.
The commentator mentions the roll at Farnborough when the prototype displayed there, I think one of the tight turns in this display goes beyond vertical. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

This PR arrived today on the subject of XH558:
-----------------------
Private flight for Terry Wogan's 'money can't buy' auction winners
raises £25,000 for charity
On the morning of Friday 8th October, two very fortunate bidders from Children In Need's 'Money Can't Buy' auction will have the most spectacular view possible of what could be the last UK flight of the iconic Vulcan bomber. Each winner will be flown alongside the giant delta-winged aircraft in a unique, twin-seat commercially-licensed aerobatics plane piloted by a former Red Arrows air ace.
The experience, auctioned by Terry Wogan on BBC Radio 2 earlier this year, was donated by The Blades aerobatics team and by the Vulcan To The Sky Trust, which operates the aircraft. Originally one seat was offered but the auction proved so popular that both organisations donated an extra seat, helping to raise £25,000 for the charity.
The Vulcan played a vital peace-keeping role throughout the cold war. Its delta-wing design and Olympus jet engines led directly to Concorde. It is so agile that its designers gave it a fighter-style joystick instead of the traditional bomber's control yoke. Now there is only one left flying and the Vulcan To The Sky Trust must raise £400,000 this month to keep her in the air.
Despite its financial problems, the Vulcan To The Sky trust continues to support its mission to inspire and educate young people and to support good causes such as Children In Need. On September 26th, the aircraft also helped raise money for Help for Heroes when it made a VIP appearance at the Coventry Airport Fly-In, jamming roads around the city as people rushed to see what could have been her last public flight.
"This is only part of the value that the UK derives from this amazing aircraft, but we survive on a tiny fraction of the budget of comparable heritage activities and receive no Government support," points out Vulcan To The Sky chief executive Dr Robert Pleming, who hopes to see the plane fly for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012. "We have tremendous plans for 2011, including growth in our commercial revenues and in our education initiatives. It will be a tragedy if, at the end of this month, the aircraft had to be auctioned, with the almost inevitable loss of her to an overseas private collector." _________________ Rick - Admin

I was delighted to see this awesome aircraft displaying at Goodwood in 2009, it flew there on both Saturday and Sunday and was for many people the star of the weekend. |

Picked up yesterday that the Vulcan has a reprieve for the next month or so, but needs (was it) about £80,000 more by the end of the month. Cannot remember where I saw it (age probably, but I hope not D********!), or the exact figures. _________________ Quote from my late Dad:- You only need a woman and a car and you have all the problems you

It's £2million per year to keep the old girl up there in the great blue yonder. Eating into the yearly budget, you have hangarage costs, specialised staff costs (e.g. Engineers & Pilots), landing fees, logistics costs (any idea what the haulage costs would be for an Olympus engine?), major work costs (you weren't doing a fatigue life extension with last night's paper and a tub of body filler ), consumables costs (e.g. OX38 oil used by the engines, destroyed in the heat lubricating the rear turbine at the rate of 3-4 pints per hour), Insurance (have you had an insurance quote for an Aston Martin? Try to get one for this thing...) and not forgetting of course, fuel of which she will burn over a ton of the stuff just at take off... _________________ Regards,

Hiya Rick..as a postcript to the above, Vulcan XH558 was indeed reprieved! Not too long ago my partner, my son and I went to Baginton airport (Coventry) to see this wonderful old beast one last time. I have a condition called Compulsive Tremors which gives me slight shakes on any given day so the footage I took looked like it was taken in an earthquake, but thankfully my son was able to take plenty of video of the day...

Please enjoy the Vulcan, Tornado and Vampire doing their stuff! |

Great vids!
Hopefully the Vulcan will soldier on for a good few years yet, and serve as a reminder of how strong and capable our manufacturing base really was. _________________ Rick - Admin
