Hi
What battery do I buy to power my flashing beacon, obviously it needs to last as long as possibe, as it won't have any charging untill I get home, it will only have a beacon on it mind.
Cheers

I'd go for what they call a 12x12. These are used on small mobillity scooters, and seem to go on for ever. I have a spare one for herself's stand-by scooter. It's nevere been used on the machine, but I use it to jump start my ride on mower, and in two years I've never yet charged it.
About £30 as I remember. Also used on golf buggies, I believe. |

I'd go for LED flashing strobes, as seen on recovery vehicles, will give you much more battery life than a rotation beacon lamp....can't you strap a generator on somewhere?

Can they not be solar powered / charged these days.
And yes LED would be less power consuming in another way, no power to a motor that turns the beacon. |

Hi
I have been looking at strobes etc, not decided on what to do yet, so many to chose from.
I have seen lots of engines with a alternator under the flywheel, wich powers head lamps and a battery obviously, but I am not keen on it att the moment, for the ammount I plan to do... Would it matter an alternator going backwards?
Cheers

Dave.
The cooling fan would be the only problem. Sucking instead of blowing.

Buzzy
See if these would do the job:
4 modes - bright white, red. green & flashing red. 40 hours run-time (maybe) on 3 little AAA batteries - included.
A local store in the US was selling these for $3.50 a pair a few weeks ago. I bought a dozen for use at the trolley museum that I volunteer at. If there's any left I'll get some more - e-mail me off-list if you want a couple.

For the low power you need cooling won't be an issue, also if air is sucked through the alternator rather than blown it will still cool.

If you run the alternator backwards AC output will flow backwards and forwards - instead of forwards and backwards!

'tis a centrifugal fan. So works the same what ever the direction of rotation.
Though to be fair the vanes are slanted a little so it won't be as effective. I made a cooling fan once for an alternator out of some heavy aluminium plate - all I had was a drill and some tin-snips.
