Another query raised via email - has anyone here fitted updated brakes to an E83W axle??

------------------------------

Hi there,

This may be a slightly unusual request for information and I may be
clutching at straws so I hope that you don't mind me asking. I have a
complete E83W front beam including spindles, hubs and brakes for a project
that I am in the process of building. I wonder whether you are aware of
any alternative hubs and brakes that may be fitted to the spindles to
enable a narrower PCD Ford wheel (for example 5 studs on a 5.5" circle) to
be fitted and hydraulic drum brakes?

Thank you in advance for any assistance that you may be able to give me.

Brake upgrades?

The brakes are huge, I would perhaps say the rods would make more difference if they were changed.

Cheers

I upgraded to hydraulic on my E93A set up. I used a brake wheel cylinder from a VW bus (part no 131 611 057 from GSF car parts). Just needed the hole for the adjuster enlarged and two small welds added to the brake shoes. For the rear I used a BMW clutch slave cylinder (part no 21 52 1 116 300 also from GSF) which I mounted to a bracket mounted on the rear diff casing. This activated the original rear rod system and allowed the rod handbrake system to remain in place. I used a Brake master cylinder from Car Builder solutions (0.625). Total cost of parts circa £65 plus brake lines.
