I'm new on this forum and after years of mgb's and a Jensen Healey, I now have a '58 Traveller to build from the ground up. It has almost no rust being an original California car, but still needs a total rebuild. I am considering a little larger engine as I wish to use this car as a daily driver. Maybe a 907 out of a Jensen? Or an s2000?
Cheers, Robert

Hi Robert, and welcome to the forum
The easiest way to get more power out of the Morris would be to go for a more powerful A Series, such as a 1098cc from a later Minor or a 1275cc from a Midget. If you went this route it would definately be wise to swap the original 'smooth case' 948 gearbox for a 1098cc 'ribbed' one, which is much stronger and nicer to use due to more effective synchromesh.
If you wanted to leave the A Series behind altogether then the best engine to fit by far would be the Fiat Twin Cam, up to 2 litre fits in the Minor engine bay, with the five speed gearbox as well. The advantage of this type of engine is that Minor specialists in the UK sell the conversion kit with everything you need, including the brake upgrades.
The Rover 1.4 K Series has also been fitted, although I'm not sure if a conversion kit is on the market.
Good luck with the Morris! _________________ Richard Hughes |

Hi Robert and welcome along.
My last rebuild was a 68 traveller and getting the new wood to fit was a nightmare! You have to make the metal fit the wood and not vice versa. My Minor road car (65) actually has the 948 engine connected to the ribbed 1098 box. Been running it like that for 4 years now and can't complain at the performance.
Looking forward to reading about your progress |
