G'day All,
Has anyone had any experience with electronic battery desulfactors that are on the market for $30 - $50.
I have read how to desulfate at battery manualy , a lot of mucking around draining the old acid , flushing the cells with distilled water and adding new acid.
If electronic ones work it would be a handy piece of kit.

Yep they do work , but desulphation will not return batteries with a shorted cell, or worn out plates back to their former glory.

Its good practice to desulpherise (don't know if that is the correct word!) batteries that tend to stand around for long periods in a discharged state, I suppose the correct answer is not to leave lead acid batteries discharged Laughing

Years ago, a chap used to advertise a powder to reverse the lead sulphate in long discharged batteries back into lead sulphate. He sold quantities sufficient to treat one 12 volt battery.
As it was not too expensive I took a gamble and added about a teaspoonful to each cell. The batteries came back to life and gave over a year of extra service.
I lost his details and cannot for the life of me remember what he called it. It seemed magic to me at the time.
Does any one remember this, or know what it was?

it is called EDTA or something like that - modern car batteries usually short out one or more cells so it will only work for batteries that gradually loose therir charge rather than suddenly

The battery I mentioned was actaually 2 x 6 volts used in series. They had been stood flat for about 5 years. I don't think they were faulty when left, just forgotten. Any way, they would not charge up until I used the stuff. EDTA seems about right. I asked a chemist once and he said it looked like an abbreviation for a complex chemical name.
