I would trust a bit of bamboo more than these old fuel gauges. I have a callibrated stick for the Talbot. _________________ 1936 Morris 8 Series 1

Lovely photos Rick, both your car & the others! I greatly look forward to the day when my project is at a point where I can take it for a run! |

Bit of a low point in the MM ownership occurred the other day. While attempting a modest hill start, there was a click at the back and all drive was lost. I assumed a driveshaft had sheared.
However today I jacked it up and withdrew both shafts - they look ok. The n/s shaft spins the prop ok, the o/s does nothing so I assume something inside the diff has broken up?? The shaft doesn't feel like it's engaging in anything inside the casing. There were some small bits of metal on the end of the o/s shaft, so my guess is that something terminal has happened to the diff

Hi Rick,
I'm sorry to hear of your diff failure. On the bright side at least it sounds as if your crown wheel and pinion are OK. The fact that it just went click sounds better than more dramatic noises. I wonder if the splines in the O/S diff cog have progressively detached and you've just snapped off the last one?

Hi Rick
Know how you feel having recently been stranded with the Stag and no drive!
I dont know if your MM diff is the same as the later 8's? if so I have a box of diff bits that may be use.....also the early 8's had an aluminium diff casing, later ones it was steel, there has long been a recomendation in 8 circles to fit the steel case diffs for better reliability ,not sure if the diff case or innards were the unreliable bits!
Cheers

Dave, so far my diff is OK. Is it an all steel diff that is more reliable or does it have just the front part that is alloy? _________________ 1936 Morris 8 Series 1
