|
|
Hi here
Just joined the group and have also just bought a Series 1 Morris 8. It looks like its been off the road since the late 90's so there is a bit of work to do.
I have had the Engine running. It gets warm and so does the radiator. Always a good sign! There was some anti freeze mixed in with the engine oil when I changed it so suspect there is a bit of work there at some point.
I currently have the brakes in bits. All clagged up with something. Master cylinder especially bad. All 6 of the transfer ports in the piston were blocked. I have bought seals, etc from the Morris Register (brilliant service - thanks Graham!)
I also have the electrics in pieces/ instrument panel dismantled and out of the car. While chasing through to find out why I was not getting any electrics to the headlamps decided to look behind the instrument panel. A few wires were bonded together by melted insulation. If it hadnt already burst into flames, it wouldnt have been long before it did!
My goal is to get it back on the road and useable for National Drive it Day at the end of April.
All the best

HI Alec,
it is good to see another 8 owner on the forum. I have a series 1 that i restored last year and have just bought a series 2 that is my next project.
Can we have some pics of your car?
I live in Suffolk, so a bit too far for a visit in the 8.
Good luck with the resto,
Bob T. |

Hi there
I have been a bit lazy in putting info on this forum but BYD397 Morris 8 Series 1 is back on the road. Managed to get the Morris through the MOT first time and have just been to the Peopleton show (Worcestershire)which is the longest journey this car has been on for at least 20 years. Nothing dropped off and didnt loose much of any fluid!
Here is a brief run down on what I have done so far and as always there is loads more to do - Powder coated wheels, new tyres all round (good pun that one!) head off, sump off, removed 2" of sludge from the sump, cleaned the oil pump and gauze, sorted the electrics, replaced a front road spring, master cylinder overhaul and 4 new wheel cylinders, replaced king pins and bushes, stripped and cleaned starter, dynamo, fuel pump, cleaned fuel tank out using soda crystals and battery charger (Brilliant!) evicted the mouse living in the rear squab plus a myriad of other cleaning, oiling, greasing, tightening, loosening, etc
I have put a couple of photos onto photobucket but cannot figure out how to get them onto this posting so will figure that at a later date.
By the way, has anyone got a working fuel tank sender and the correct length starting handle?
I will probably have to have a look at the engine bearings before too long as when cold I have 45psi oil pressure and when hot it drops to 0 psi. I am using a straight 30 grade oil and am thinking of using either a straight 40 or a 20/50 to see if its better when hot. Any thoughts?
All the best

Hi there
Heres a few more bits of info re my little project.
One job that I will be cracking on with soon is to paint over the light blue paint with a Royal Blue cellulose. (More like the correct colour.) I suspect that its 2K or similar (very hard and I cannot get scratches out with my current cutting paste.) It looks like this has been on for a good few years. Would I be OK just to rough up the surface with some fine wet and dry and then prime/ top coat in cellulose.
I am also going to make a false sunroof as it has a panel welded in where the original roof was. I dont want to take this out as I dont know what horrors I will find underneath. I am planning to cover a piece of marine ply with some padding and some everflex and then "glue" it to the roof. Add a small bead of silicon seal round the edge and it should be as right as ninepence.
Apart from that out at the weekend for a trip into Bromyard and its all running well enough although I did have to fiddle with the timing a bit just for the sake of it.
In amongst this I have got the bathroom to sort and a load of walls outside to build. Deep joy! |

Brilliant car! Very good pics. Good luck with the restoration project
I have a Morris 8 Ser. E 1946. The Morris cars are nice and simple, part of their charm. Keep up the good work
