Audley Service Station in 2008

I spotted this now-empty garage in Audley, North Staffs, in March 2008. At the time the site was up for sale and, according to a chap who was walking by when I took some photos, the site is due to be re-developed, no doubt into another cluster of bland look-a-like 'affordable' homes. Marvellous. So it seemed like a good opportunity to take some pictures, before the building gets pulled down, and another example of the once-common roadside garage/workshop disappears for good.

Mr Bibendum has waved farewell to the final customer..
In later years a Citroen business operated from Audley Service Station, but they re-located and the empty building soon started to deteriorate, as can be seen in this photograph. Apparently the building was converted into use as a garage/service station in the 1940s, by a gent called Ernest Price, where all manner of motor vehicles would be serviced, and tools could be purchased. Previously the building was used as the village smithy. One or two petrol pumps also used to be on this site after Mr Price took over, dispensing motor spirit to passing motorists as they either headed East towards Stoke, or Westerly, perhaps on a daytrip to Wales.
