Former Morris car agents, Mutley Plain, Plymouth.

Bartons garage in the 1930s
Steve in Devon sent in these photos and information.. "Formerly Bartons, who were Plymouth's main Morris Agents. Situated at the Hyde Park end of Plymouth's Mutley Plain, the building is today occupied by a couple of estate agents and a cycle shop. Its smart art deco styling is very distinctive. The clock still works and keeps good time, plus the original BMC logo is in good condition above the front door. The filling station survived in the hands of Jet until 2000, but has now become a Late Spar shop. When I first acquired a Ford Granada 2.8i Ghia estate, I managed to run out of petrol but was going quite fast enough to coast a couple of hundred yards along Mutley Plain and end up on the Jet station forecourt, near enough to be pushed to a pump!".

The advert alongside was found in a 1930s magazine showing Bartons in its heyday.

In 2008 Lisa got in touch. She found this page while researching the history of her classic Mini, and had this to say:
"I've just discovered from British Motor Heritage that my 1968 Morris Mini was delivered to the Barton Motor Company in Mutley Plain Plymouth. I had looked through your fantastic website before but had never imagined that a guy in Axminster would go all the way to Plymouth to buy a car, surely there was a closer Morris dealer?!
Once I'd made my discovery, I couldn't believe my luck when I found some great pics of this BMC dealer building on your site and it still exists! It would be really great to know when it ceased to be a BMC/Leyland/Austin-Morris dealer, and just what happened to all the vehicle sales records. My car was sold from this dealer and registered on 13 June 1968 (the day after I was born, which I didn't realise until after I'd driven it away) and lived its life around Axminster and Seaton, Devon until 1985 when it went to Yorkshire. I brought it back to the Isle of Wight in 2002 and then back to where it started in 2006, undergoing a very very very slow restoration!! Once again, this is a truly fascinating website, and if anyone can help with the Mutley Plain question it would be most appreciated.
Many thanks in advance, Lisa. "
Thanks for getting in touch, does anyone know what happened to the sales records for the Mutley Plain BMC garage?
