The Speedwell company produced a raft of individual leaflets throughout the early 1960s, each covering one particular type of performance upgrade that they offered. This particular one details the exhaust system components that you could order from their offices at Finchley Road, in London. On the cover is a very interesting vehicle, namely the Speedwell Streamliner. The text on the cover advises that this is ... "The Speedwell Streamliner, fitted with a Clubman 70 engine and a Speedwell Exhaust System, clocked 132.206 mph over a flying mile - a Belgian National Record for cars of its class." The then-company Chairman, a certain Graham Hill, was behind the wheel. I wonder what happened to this particular Austin Healey Sprite - where are you now, VXT 523?

In the centre of the leaflet are photographs showing the various exhaust components that could be purchased. Cars listed are: Austin Seven/Mini, A40, A55 Mk2, A35, Austin Healey Sprite (Frogeye), Ford Anglia 105E, MGA (1500, 1600, twin cam), Morris 1000, Riley 1.5, Sunbeam Alpine, Triumph Herald, VW, Wolseley 1500, and, systems yet to be photographed, the Hillman Minx and Renault Dauphine. For each car you could buy a Supertone silencer, and/or a full flow manifold.

The back page gives more information on the systems:

"Normal baffle-type silencers hinder the flow of exhaust gases and reduce the efficiency of your engine. Speedwell Exhaust Systems, by incorporating Supertone Silencers with 'straight through' Servais absorption allow these gases to escape freely and enable your engine to develop its full power with maximum fuel economy.

The Speedwell full-flow exhaust manifold assists in extracting residue gases from combustion chambers after each exhaust stroke, and ensures that their is no pressure build-up anywhere through the system. This guarantees maximum efficiency.

The exhaust note becomes more sporty in keeping with the extra surge you will get from your engine.

All Supertone Silencers have chrome tail pipes complying with the latest British Standard for plating. All manifolds are finished in heat-resisting silver/grey lacquer and each system is complete with all necessary brackets. As all Supertone Silencers are fitted at the rear of the car, suitable pipes are supplied where required to replace existing silencers fitted amidships. Silencers and manifolds ca, of course, be purchased separately."
