Back to the 1929 Eccles caravan page, part of the classic caravan section of oldclassiccar.

Still with this unusual old Eccles is the original sales brochure, dating to 1929 and containing plenty of information on the collapsible range of trailer caravans that Eccles sold back in the 1920s and 1930s. A couple of pages have been reproduced below, highlighting the ingenious way that this 'van was used.

The text on these pages reads as follows:

"Raised and lowered by handle operating endless chain and machine cut screws encased in metal telescopic tubes."

"Built of hard wood with steel reinforced sides giving great stability, on steel chassis, underworks, wheels, tyres, automatic brakes and roller bearings giving ample margin of strength. Fitted with Eccles Patent all-in-one tow-pole. Fitted with Eccles patent adjustable jack legs.
Completely furnished and fitted with stove and oven, table. Cooking and table requisites fitted in lockers with our special rattleproof devices. Most comfortable spiral spring seats and beds. Lockers for bedclothes, stores, wearing apparel, and electric lights and tail lamp. Fitted up food safe in special locker."

"These vans are specially built to meet the requirements of those who wish the collapsible type of Van, to accomodate two or four persons, so as to enable them to lower the roof when travelling, or in a garage where height is a consideration. They are fitted out with our endless telescopic screw system which gives them surety that the top when raised is permanently fixed and not likely to become dislodged under exceptional weather conditions. At the same time it gives safety when camping against collapse. These Vans, as in all "Eccles" Vans, are fitted with ample locker accomodation and completely furnished and equipped. Walls, ceilings and all furniture are French Polished by hand, and the beds are spiral sprung and upholstered to the taste of the customer."
