Nice sunny day with no wind here today so greased the king pins and track rod ends on the SS, then decided that my front tyres were getting marginal so took off my 4 plies and put on a couple of 6 plies. Gosh 6 plies are hard work. ...especially trying to get the valve into the rim.

My SAAB V4 passed it's MOT yesterday so nothing to do on that.
Today I took the steering box out of the TR2..that involves taking the front panel off but was reasonably quick so we then took the gearbox out of the Daimler Dart to investigate a slipping clutch..it was fitted 10,000 miles ago and we found the input shaft seal in the gearbox had been spraying oil everywhere..that had contaminated the friction plate. The flywheel also needs skimming.
To celebrate a good day i opened a rather special bottle of beer..and promptly knocked it over _________________ Rust Junky & oil addict. |

Swapped another couple of 6 plies onto my rear axle. Topped up the axle and gearbox. Investigated modifying a new rubber gearbox tunnel to replace my rather decrepit, patched original. The replacement is for an earlier car and needs a few changes to fit mine.
Ordered some sticky weights to rebalance my wheels.

Fan belt broke on the Merc today - thought it would be easy but it's been a nightmare to replace. Alternator adjuster was so tight I had to use a breaker bar to undo it, the local motor factors didn't have a belt (modern stuff doesn't use V belts any more of course) and to replace it also required removal of the power steering pulley and belt. Bits of engine all over the garage tonight while I wait for my order tomorrow!
BTW Peter, your wheel balancing method inspired me to fabricate my own balancer based on the static bubble jobbies you can buy. I used an old loose ball joint welded to a metal cone, over which the wheel is placed (horizontally) and a household spirit level in true Heath Robinson style.....it worked! Its nice to be fully independent of tyre shops now. |

Hi Chris,
Good stuff! DIY if at all possible.

Today I removed the cylinder head from the estate and strippedout the valves. All the valve seats are badly pitted and so are the valves. Tomorrow I will take the head off my spare engine and see what it is like. Not too worried really as its the first big job in 2 years but its a dawdle of a job anyway. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

Last Friday got the hunter out and gave it a good clean on the outside and the engine bay.
Last saturday changed the lhs rubber boot on the blue mini and then helped my cousin on dismantling parts form his mini's engine bay in order to prepare it for paint.
On sunday went to an event organized by the club with the blue mini. |

well, it all started on the club run last saturday.....
we ended up joining Todmorden carnival parade and after a mile and a half at 2mph, the Alvis got up to 100 degrees. (I've never had it running so hot before) after the parade we parked on a car park and when it was time to leave, she wouldn't start at all.
an hour later, when she'd cooled down, she started fine and my first thought was fuel vaporization.
yesterday morning (I've not had the Alvis out since) I removed the spark plugs and they were brilliant white.
then I remembered... the throttle spindle has been sucking air since I rebuilt the car and the carb was set to over fuel to compensate the extra air.
a couple of weeks ago, I repaired the leaking spindle with new bushes and turned the fueling down.
I must of turned the fueling down too much, so yesterday, in a vain attempt to sort it out before going to Tatton park on sunday, I ran the car up to 90 degrees, turned the fueling up a bit and voila...at 90 degrees she started on the button.
so hopefully she'll be alright for sunday. I'll give her a wash and polish later today as its my youngest's 8th birthday tomorrow and I've been told to leave the car/s alone _________________ "people with money buy a Rolls Royce, people with taste buy an Alvis". |

Having fitted new tyres all round I spent this morning re-balancing them.
This is not as simple as it seems because my brake drums aren't well balanced so I need to balance the drums with the wheels and mark them so they are correctly oriented.
The hassle is that I have to balance the rear wheels and drums on a front axle (to get free rotation). The drums are held on the hubs with 5 nuts so there's quite a bit of faffing around, first checking the heavy points of the wheels without drums then the drums without wheels. This allows me to use the minimum about of additional weights because I can orient the heavy points of the drums 180 degrees out from the heavy points of the wheels.
Anyway the process seems to have worked quite well and the car runs relatively smoothly at 70 mph.
