| Why did it all go wrong? Many of the old Brit cars in these adverts were world leaders. They had their faults but no more than foriegn cars of the day. The difference was the foriegn makers, but the Brit companies carried on producing the same old problems. |

Britain was bankrupt after the war and was obliged to pay off its dept to the USA for many years thereafter.
In stark contrast Germany and Japan received massive aid allowing them to re-equip with modern tooling .

I agree Britian was in financial trouble, but how much of the "Marshal Plan" money was wasted on nationalisation in the 40's.
Back to cars. Austin knew they had a problem with cylinder block castings in the the mid thirties, but British Leyland still carried on using the same methods, probably until they sold out to B.M.W. I know in the eighties the company I worked for sold Gold Seal Engines for a short time. In the bumf from B.L. it said due to the material used in the castings, engines would often burn oil but if they did 250 miles per pint that was acceptable. |
