Very interesting.

What is meant when it was said to have your licence with you when you go for the test? If you have a licence already, why would one go for the test? Or does this mean some sort of learner's permit?

How did testers manage who did not have access to a handy brickyard?

I got my licences in both New Zealand and Australia, at a time when hand signals were the law. The film didn't show the hand signal for 'stop' unless I missed it.

You were issued with a Provisional licence, which meant you could drive with someone with a full licence in the car. Once you'd passed your test, you got a bit of paper from the tester that you could send off to a licensing authority to upgrade yours to Full.

Hi Dane,

In the UK there were only three (car) signals and strangely this film only showed two of them.

1. About to turn right.
2. Slowing down
3. About to turn left (not shown but was arm extended and hand describing an anticlockwise circle.)

The guy who was doing the non-comedy 3 point turn signalled right and not I'm slowing down. I have trafficators but they are a little wide for the slot in the car so I'll be doing hand signals.

Thanks Peter. In Oz we used the 'right hand turn', the 'I am slowing down', the same as U.K. The please overtake was used but AFAIK was never an approved signal. The stop signal was with the forearm and hand held vertical, meaning 'I am stopping', but it could also mean 'I am about to turn to the left'.

Commercial vehicles that were too wide for the driver's arm to be seen were equipped with mechanical 'hands'. The arm could be held out for a right hand turn, moved up and down for 'slow down' and the hand on the end of the arm could be pivoted to the upright position for 'stop'.

Bought one of those for the ute some time ago, whether I'll ever get around to needing it though is another matter Smile

I'd be very surprised if he passed at all. I had one of the V8s shown in the film - started off as a 22HP but was changed to 30HP prior to my purchase.
It accelerated like a rocket but very quickly ran out of breath still having the low ratio diff for the 22HP - still was fun for a while,cheers,JD.
