It's not so often that a presentable one of these turns up for auction:

Looks a good example. This one was for sale in the NE recently (Durham I think). Needs the correct front sidelights, apart from that a very nice looking car! I particularly like the non-standard red vinyl roof, very fetching.

Am I correct in remembering that the Austin Atlantic shares the same gearbox as an Austin Healey 100/4?

Atlantics were 3 speed with 4th blanked off. Is it possible to re-instate the 4th gear?

Sir Jackie Stewart also has an Austin Atlantic so whoever buys this will be in good company.

It was the Healey 100/4 that had the three speed floor change, while the Atlantic had a four speed column change. I think the gearbox is similar, the previous owner of mine planned to convert to floor change and bought all the Healey gearbox bits that were different, inc. the gear lever and 3rd motion shaft? Not that I have any plans to change it from the original. The engine is exactly the same as the 100/4, hence why lots of Atlantics were used as engine donors for Healeys in the 1960's.

I didn't know Sir Jackie had an Atlantic. I thought his mother had one in the 1950's and I know he recently drove a convertible belonging to a club member (LUO 720) for a TV documentary.

I had an A70 that I put an Atlantic engine into. I don't know for sure but I reckon it would have been 1st gear that was blanked off. I used to rip the teeth off 1st. on a regular basis. I had two gearboxes, one in and one in waiting. Laughing

You are right of course. I got it the wrong way round!

So that was a club member's car that JS drove on that biography documentary of him?
In the programme the Atlantic was a red example.

Logical really, he has always been a Ford man (except his family's dealership sold Jaguars).

Brooklands New Year's Day Meet 2012 - 1950 Austin A90 Atlantic Convertible (LUO 720) by growler2ndrow, on Flickr

I believe this one belongs to club member Dennis Robinson from Surrey Cool
