In the first instance you should contact the Austin Counties Owners Club.
They will have a person in the club who helps people like you with these issues.
He will need as much information from you that you can find.
He will then contact DVLA to get the car registered, or he will give you enough ammunition to deal with them yourself.
Your local DVLA office would want to inspect the car to make sure it is what you say it is.
You will need document proof of import duty paid .
Insurance certificate.
Heritage build certificate or proof from the club when the car was manufactured.
After they are satisfied about the car they will issue an age related number plate for the car.
I have done this myself many times with imported vehicles.

Whoa, hang on..... you don't know it has been imported. Can of worms there.
It's a vehicle that you know absolutely nothing about, right?
Treat it as a barn find. Join the club if not already in; contact the guy who deals with DVLA liaison; just apply for an age-related number using vehicle details.
If you don't know for definite that it has been imported, don't make trouble for yourself.
I might just remove the NZ sticker as well! |

The local VOSA office will inspect on the DVLA's behalf; they sent someone within three days to check the details of one of my cars after a mis-reading of the body number by a MOT inspector. If it's straight forward identity verification, quite often the word of a club official will do; I've done it myself several times on behalf of our DVLA officer. |

I've inspected a car before on behalf of a club, it's just a matter of making sure the chassis (and engine, if original) numbers look correct and untampered with. Chassis number on the Somerset is, if I remember correctly, next to the N/S engine mounting, with a small plastic plate containing the same details on the back of the drivers sunvisor.
I second joining the Austin Counties Car Club, their DVLA rep will be able to advise on the procedure for registering. Does it have the export-spec oil bath air filter?
Good luck! _________________ Richard Hughes |

If you admit that it is imported, you may be fined for it not having been subject to a NOVA declaration to HMRC, there only being a limited period allowed to make this post import.
Note also that there are no local DVLA offices anymore and Swansea is very anal about historic registrations and wil try and palm you off with a Q plate unless the owners club information is watertight. _________________ 1953 Citroen Traction
