You may already know of this, but I sure didn't. In spite of watching film about WWII and the European theatre, I never knew the logistics of how all the military vehicles were supplied with fuel. They sure couldn't just stop at the corner station and fill up their tanks or jeep gas tanks. I found this film fascinating. And so weird to hear amazing details about D-Day so long after the event. What a fantastically complex engineering and operational feat it was, and how remarkable the skill and effort exhibited by the young men of the early 40's who planned and made the landing successful.

Did you know that there is a tenuous connection between Melbourne Australia and PLUTO?
The connection is because the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch railway was involved with some of the PLUTO work, and the R.H & D was built by a Captain Howey in partnership with Count Zbrowsky. Captain Howey was far from a pauper. In the 1830's sea Captain Howey, bought a plot of land in the first sales of land for what became the City of Melbourne. He paid just a few pounds for it. Melbourne boomed and the land value skyrocketed, a building on the site became 'Howey House'. Apparently ownership remained with the family for many years, but when sold, a fortune was made, and Army Captain Howey became the heir to at least some of that money. This enabled him to fulfill his dream of a narrow gauge railway.
To quote a well-known actor, "Not many people know that!"
The name Howey is still part of Melbourne in the form of 'Howey Place'. _________________ Dane- roverdriver but not a Viking. |

That was amazing, thank you for sharing.
But, as I said in another thread, all credit to those who laid the pipeline, but lets not forget the men who designed the machines which made it possible.
Another point: if we had another war, none of that sort of work would be possible, because HSE wouldn't allow it!!! |
