once I was not able to buy Land Rover ...so ... made myself a little one. Self-welded chassis, engine out of a cart, accelerate and brake pedal ... and hours of (offroad)fun!
And it did the things that normal Landrover do.. nice days offroading, and nights of work, got stuck.. layed on his side, did some work (transporting wood, sand, ...), and you could also say.. " we don't go fast, but we can go anywere! will never forget the times! |

My earliest recollection was a clockwork London bus. I also had a few Dinky and Lesney cars but in the early 50s it was mainly clockwork toys. I had a 3 wheeler bike that I got for Christmas. Loved that 3 wheeler. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

Do not know what happened to it, wish I'd kept it now as I'd have restored it for my daughter to use!! |

My earliest recollection was my "Matchbox Motorway" - a sort of slot-racing set without the racing! The slots contained long springs which were powered along the slot by a motor in a trackside building. You stuck a plastic pin to the bottom of your matchbox cars with a sort of foil 'sticking plaster', the pin engaged with the spring and away they went! Made a heck of a racket if I remember correctly... |

In the mid 50s my Mum and Dad bought me a Meccano set for Christmas, a kit to make a mobile crane I think. It was far beyond my capabilities as a 4-5 year old but one morning I came downstairs and Dad had made it! I thought it was brilliant and played with it for hours, picking up things, rolling it along and dropping them somewhere else.
Then it snowed, a really heavy fall and I was out with my chums having loads of fun, all thoughts of the crane forgotten. By the start of the new school term the crane was stashed in a cupboard, I don't remember ever seeing it again. |

Various clockwork toy cars and wagons.
But one that that I can remember, well three actualy.
An 8 wheeler Clockwork Guy flat bed lorry, was about 12 inches long and weighed a ton..
An 'O' guage railway, with all the levers, and a track layout that covered an 18x18 foot sitting room floor.
and a tinplate tracked race track, like Scalex before the plastic track.
Not sure but I think the lorry and railway were Triang |

Don't mean to brag, but my earliest toy car was an actual midget racer. My dad used to race midgets at Belle Vue, Manchester in '60s and one day he turned up at the house with a one that had been written off in a crash and had it craned into the back yard for me to play in. I'm guessing he had all the good bits out for spares, including the motor, but I still had the basic car, body, wheels, seat etc. and he put the smashed side against the wall so to all intents and purposes it looked like a pretty decent red racing car. Best present a kid could have.
I remember the basic shape being a lot like this (without all the chrome and custom leather and paint of course):

I have a vague recollection of a stationary steam engine. I don't know if it was a Mamod or not. I seem to remember connecting Meccano models to it with a long string belt, not very successfully. The engine was too fast and the models shook to pieces or fell over |
