I know most of you said you would continue to MOT your classic cars even thought it's no longer a legal requirement. I missed last year but I have just booked the Aston in for an MOT on Thursday. Assuming it passes I wonder what paperwork do you get these days? |

What happens if by chance a pre 60s car fails an MOT? I presume by law it should not be allowed on the road but I suspect there will be a few unscrupulous owners who will still drive them _________________ ROVER

By definition it is roadworthy on the day and it is down on public record too.
So if you really must have an MOT certificate in the first place make sure you also have proof e.g. a retest its been rectified.
It is just a matter of seeing something through properly you started off that was not required and playing the rules.
An MOT is not a lot of use IMHO but the car must be properly inspected by someone who knows what they doing and regularly too. Some (or most?) MOT inspectors do not what they are doing even when blindingly obvious _________________ Rover P2

As the MOT is a test of roadworthiness and it's illegal to drive a car you know to be unroadworthy a pre60 MOT failure should be treated like any other MOT failure. I should imagine it will be recorded as a failure and picked up by ANPR as such. _________________ David

| True that without a repair such a car would be illegal at that point but it would still not need an MOT certificate. If stopped by Authorities it would be up to them to identify the feature(s) that made the car unroadworthy. They can do that with any pre-1960 car if they have reason to believe that it is in a dangerous condition. |

If a pre-60s car had been taken for an MOT and failed, the reason for the fail would be on the the fail notice, a copy of which would be given to the owner and recorded in the DVLA database. _________________ David

| Anyway, with its 4 new Avon Turbospeed crossplys fitted it passed with flying colours. I like having it done, the chaps where I take my cars are all old school and know classics, indeed one of them runs a Morris Minor for fun. It gives me a chance to get underneath and have a good poke round together with the examining mechanic and while he's checking stuff I look for oil leaks! Seems I need a new oil seal at the rear of the gearbox now. The certificate also shows the mileage for the last 4 years so in future there's a track record of the mileage. For £48 I can't see why one would not have it done. |
