My club is affiliated to the FBHVC (Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs) but I get the feeling the Federation is becoming increasingly distant from the clubs it represents.

Am I wrong? I hope I am as I feel the classic vehicle movement does need an umbrella organisation to look after its interests but I'm just not convinced the FBHVC is doing that - or if it is, it's not communicating sufficiently with or involving member clubs.

For example: it's a shame, in my view, there's no FBHVC on-line forum where important issues can be discussed and opinions made known.

I'm not trying to stir up a hornets' nest, just wondering if I'm out of step with current opinion, that's all. What do you think?

From the updates I read in the VSCC newsletter every month, they seem to be doing a decent job of representing our interests. Obviously I'm not privvy to the inner workings, or present at meetings etc, but I think we'd be worse off without an organised central body keeping an eye on legislation that may affect us adversely.

The FBHVC do publish a monthly magazine (which you can get on their website if you can't see a copy locally) with a load of stuff on what they're doing, and news from their member clubs. One of the main reasons we joined was that the discount it got us on public liability insurance was more than the cost of joining, so a win-win as we also get a lot of content for our newsletter in quiet months.

I know they've been lobbying on our behalf on points like the recent proposal to change MOT regulations that would effectively make it impossible to test a car that had any modifications. How much influence they had on the outcome (or current position is perhaps more accurate) is unknown of course.
