I was best man at a mates wedding and he hired a DB6 to drive us to the church and then him and his wife off to the reception...
he was not an experienced 'classic' driver and the drive home from the pick up scared him half to death.. the steering and brakes were incredibly heavy, and he was expecting a powerful and well handling sports car... i guess it was superior in its day but any family saloon could out perform it now.
On the wedding day he asked me to drive it instead - of course i obliged. it was lovely but if it were mine there is no way i'd let any old tom dick and harry drive it!!
best thing was everyone assumed it was mine as i've got the wedding car company! |

I'm not sure that this counts but back in the 1980s I hired a Citroen Mehari (that might be thought a classic today) on a Greek island. The Mehari was unremarkable but the interesting bit was the insurance. The island was totally sewn up by the mafia but that aside we took the optional insurance and I still have the document that states that the insurance does not cover off road use or use in towns or within 30 metres of the sea.
The only road on the island was coastal and the only roads further from the sea were in the town. If there was any part of the road system that was covered then I don't think we ever discovered it.

I once flew out to a holiday in northern Portugal to find a friend who had arrived a week before me had hired me a car - a Renault 4. Not looking forward at all to driving it, within a couple of days I was smitten; its suspension was ideal for the state of the local roads, I soon got used to its push-pull-twist gear change, it was supremely comfortable and it carried all our luggage with ease.
I'm now trying to persuade a friend who lives in France to buy one just so I can have a second drive! _________________ David
