So, as per the heading really, Do you use the radio etc whilst out driving?

I love driving the Singer and like to have a few tunes playing, Found out that by plugging a suitable lead into my '60s Sony radio, I can plug my Iphone into the system and off you go, any tunes I like...makes for a lovely drive out.

The Sony radio

Only issue ive found is the speakers fitted to the rear of the car (in the '70s id guess, as the Radiomobile 8 track came as a kit with the speakers currently fitted) are perished. Ive ordered some replacement Alpine units and will replace them, retaining the Radiomobile covers for that period look.
So, back to the question, do you bother with music when out and about in the classic of your choice?

I did install a valve radio many years ago but kept skinning my knuckles on it when gear changing so I took it out again.

I've got an old Sony radio/cassette in the Firenza. It's not from the same era as the car - the Viva / Firenza / Magnum dash had no place for a radio to be fitted, so there's not really any point aiming for something contemporary and I want to actually be able to hear it. It's got a wired remote control on the side of the steering column shroud, as it's mounted quite low down and increasing the volume on getting onto a motorway was quite dangerous.

My MK VI has a Radiomobile that I restored, but I can't stand the BBC and prefer silence.

But my modern car can play the music or radio stations my iPhone receives, so I occasionally listen to www.radiodismuke.com Nothing else comes close. Wink

My 1970 Herald came with a 1968 motorola LW/MW radio fitted. I had it converted to FM and a lead fitted that will plug into the headphone socket of any device and play it through the radio.

It all looks absolutely period but I can receives all the usual FM stations and play my own music too.

The conversion was done This was done by The Vintage Wireless Company. Sale way IIRC.

No music in my Riley apart from the sound of its B Series engine through a one and three-quarter inch exhaust - who needs it when you have that to listen to?

My other half has a 72' mk1 escort, no radio sadly, so instead of butchering and putting in a modern one, he bought a speaker (normally lasts about 4-5 hours) and he uses Velcro to stick between his dash and window! You then link it up with your mobile phone via Bluetooth (nice and techical, eats your phone battery quickly!!)

Doesn't look that bad either!

It might be worth looking for the period centre console, to mount a radio. Some of the options had one fitted, but I wonder if there is an aftermarket version still available?

The blast from the exhaust, the rustle from the wind section, and the singing from the gears; who needs a radio?

I did the first few years after my rebuild without a radio, then I just started to get a bit bored once I was going somewhere more than about ten miles away so I added one. It's good to be able to hear what's going on, but it soon gets a bit wearing.

I doubt very much if I could even hear a single note if I fitted one to the Ruby.
The first time I drove the car, I couldn't believe just how noisy it was.
Flying in a Fat Albert was quiet in comparison. Very Happy

Interesting that some find their car's engine note music to their ears whilst others want to disguise it with music. I love the sound of different engines whether it's the four cylinder in my Riley, the straight six in my recently sold Mercedes or the V8 in my Audi - all of them make glorious sounds!

I love listening to my cars whilst out and about, just gets a bit boring after an hour or 2?

So here is a contentious one; I also like the sound of a V8 burbling away, nothing matches the sound of the V16 of the pre-war racers, a smooth turbine sound of a straight six, the intake noise of a pair of sidedraft Webers feeding a hungry twin cam, the wail of a Rotary engine, the whine of a supercharger, the guts of a JAP twin under full throttle guzzling methanol at 6 miles to the gallon,a modern Japanese multi when used enthusiastically, a big bore parallel twin, clicking through all four gears, even the 'farting' of a Moggi on overrun I also appreciate Radio two, but I also like to find the knob that says 'off'.
It all depends on how you use your classic, a fine sunday afternoon, a long tunnel, a progressively steepening hill, something to make the throttle dip whilst loading the engine, all music to my ears, but when sat on the M74, with 300 miles to go, where is that knob. Sometimes Simon Garfunkel got it right, "the sound of silence".
PS, I use a Walkman, (bit like an I-pod but older), cuts out the wind noise, and keeps me in touch with traffic information to avoid traffic jams, where in a water-pumpless, and fan-less car, sitting in traffic soon turns to steam!

Hi ka

I hope your walkman doesn't block out the sound of 2 tones. Very Happy

It amazes me how some people drive around with windows open "entertaining" all within a 1/4 ml,
I feel that any "music" played in a car should not be audible outside the car, personally my radio/tape/disc player only knows where R4, R5 and my local station are, but it finds others for traffic info.

I expect the tape and disc players have seized up now through non-use. Very Happy
