|
|
Hi,
I am new to this site and joined it as I use some older vehicles and machinery on my farm. I prefer to use older, simpler (mechanical) equipment that I can overhaul and repair myself.
I need to buy a pickup truck, but it needs to suit my purposes. It will be a working vehicle, not a restoration project or show-piece. I have been browsing websites with older and classic vehicles for sale, but I can not find what I am looking for. Can anyone give me any recommendations for a pickup truck that ticks these boxes:-?
1) I live in the UK and need to buy in the UK and get parts here. Right-hand drive preferred...
2) I need a 4x4 with good ground clearance and suspension, as I need to access a hill farm on muddy, icy, snowed-in farm tracks. Two-wheel drive doesn't cut it.
3) Reliability. I need something that can be left standing for two months unattended, then start on the turn of the key and can be repaired without specialist dealers' facilities.
4) Needs to be pre-1960 to be exempt from MOT and Road Tax charges, but still on 12V electrics.
5) Diesel preferred, but as it will be limited mileage, petrol would be OK.
6) Reasonable price. I am looking for a working vehicle at a "commodity price" not a highly prized classic that goes for "stupid money" to restoration enthusiasts or a teenager's "retro hotrod" ...
Could anyone recommend any models that I should be searching for that fit the description above? Please also add comments as to why your recommendation is most suitable, and any pitfalls I should look for.
Many thanks for all opinions on this...
Cheers,
Rob |

Agree with alanb! Your choice is pretty limited if you want to avoid exotica!
As for things to look for - make sure the chassis is sound. New chassis are available but changing one is one heck of a job!

+1 agreed, and welcome to the forum Rob
The Landy has to be the best answer, in terms of being a fairly simple old bus to keep running, with excellent (usually cheap-ish) parts support offered by the many LR specialists out there.
You'd need to think about whether a long- or short-wheelbase version would be most appropriate.
Pitfalls? well, rust can attack the chassis and also the steel bulkhead, but otherwise I think they're fairly bomb-proof.
Other choices? Austin produced the Gipsy, but it wasn't all that well received and - with its steel bodywork - rotted quicker than the rival LR.

| I'd go for the Landy long wheelbase pick-up, good and tough and cheap spares. |
