I guess a lot a old car fans are just not in the fractional million pound league and if they are they still need to consider how much they will use their toys relative to other forms of toy requiring that expenditure. Houses, boats, aircraft, art, what have you?
Just limiting our attentions to cars there are clearly some very different perceptions as to what makes it worth paying out loads-a-money.
Some are excited by:
Beautiful hand crafted engineering.
Beautiful sexy lines.
Avant garde design.
Rarity value.
Actual racing/rallying success.
Association with the rich and famous.
Important history.
I'm not so sure about the value of rarity except that there may be more buyers competing but I guess the others are understandable.
What is less understandable is certain versions of mass production cars that can command prices 10 or 20 times those using the same mechanicals but with different bodywork. Is there really 10 or 20 times greater enjoyment to be had with these versions?

Much agree, Peter.
One I thirst for has always been a Maserati 250F: those gorgeous rivets in lines and the wondrous "Layer of Sixpences" of the gas welding on the original exhaust.
Etc. _________________ Well, apart from that, did you enjoy the play, Mrs Lincoln? |

It's just an advanced form of snobbery. I'll take the underdog every time. Their time will come.
