aluminium casting corrosion?

Hi, I'm just about to start rebuilding the engine of my 1951 simca 8 and I've noticed that the coolant inlet piece is corroding away on the inside.Its mostly in 2 areas and I scape it off then a few days later its all blistered and crumbly again.I tried sealing it with varnish but that did'nt work, so what's eating it?
I've never seen this before.
I will try and post some pics of the car.Cheers.
