Can't help wondering how many real "time warps" there are left in the UK.
The picture shows my grandson (right) standing in front of 'Hercules' at New Romney station today. 60 years ago I would have stood in the same spot in front of the same engine and even 20 years before that (1927), the same train pulled the first coach on its inaugural run.
That engine has been doing that same run for 80 years. Can you beat that?

forgive my ignorance please; am i to understand that such a wonderful sight as that engine and it's accompanying site and equipment have survived through WW2 and the following Recovery Era without being sold for scrap/made into a carpark? i AM impressed! it is a BEAUTY and i wish we had them over here. such a mono-centric endeavour in the States is almost unheard of... if 99% of the public won't enjoy it, it won't get built.
and the expressions on those lad's faces; PRICELESS. |

Reb, pigtin will probably correct me on this if I'm wrong, but the railway line that this locomotive runs on, was actually involved in the war effort. i have a vague memory that it was used as some kind of front line defence, then after D-day to support the troops in some way.....

Yes it's pretty impressive and they had a contract to run the children from across the Romney Marsh to school in New Romney and back. My own nephews did the school run on these trains for some years, lucky kids!

don't be offended when i say this please; but one thing that has always impressed me about the British is a willingness to put to use anything at hand in times of need. our fabled "yankee ingenuity" does not compare to your resourcefulness! we would have spent millions to build a fullsize railway to replace that one, losing every bit of the history and interest. |

Anything 'Steam Railway' tends to attract incredible enthusiasm, and money, here in England and I hope it will always be the case with the RH&DR.
Yes, the maintenance costs must be enormous with track station and crossing maintenance probably costing more than the rolling stock. With so many un-manned level crossings etc' one cannot help but feel that the main danger to its existence comes from the "Safety Industry" an organization that has attracted many self-important little prats who would like to, and already have in many cases, destroy our way of life in order to justify their existence.
Sadly there have been two accidents in recent years resulting in the deaths of the train drivers, both caused by cars driving on to the level crossings, in the last case the car driver was prosecuted.

Just come across this amongst my collection of old, local postcard images: I seems that at the time of this accident the army were still involved in the RH&DR. Sadly thes accidents usually prove fatal for the train driver.

Hi
Wow, imagine the weight! Is the truck with the beam out the back, a steamer?
I do envy your postcard collection, maybe I should start collecting some too! hehe
Cheers
