Hi

I have just driven back from the pub, about 10 miles away, and off and on, mostly on, the damn front disc brakes on the mini on the drivers side have been locked on.

Any ideas what I should do?

I don't do disc brakes never have done, as few tractors have them, I can do most stuff to drums, but discs I am lost???

Most likely a caliper piston is sticking.

Take the pads out and try to push the piston back into the casing. Not too far or you might get brake fluid overflowing from the master cylinder.

If it won't move you will need to get the piston out and replace the seals.

Alternatively, check the flexible hose is in good condition. They can rot on the inside and block which can also hold the pad against the disc.


I know these modern ideas (less than 50 years!) take a bit of getting used to, but there are far fewer moving parts on disc brakes, and it is quicker to get to the pads than it is to get to the shoes on drums.

BrianM: Thats good advice you have given, apart from one thing. The first discs were fitted to a vehicle in 1902, believe it or not!

I don't remember that far back, I thought they arrived in the 1950's (Jag D-types at Le Mans and all that stuff).

But did they work in 1902?!?

I hate them either way, I could strip a drum brake and build it up in the time it has take to strip that disc! I have solved oting, bar lying in an ants nest, and I think finishing that brake off all together, It is like having independant brakes now, I can turn left without touching the steering wheel. It has stopped binding a bit, but that may be the oil I put on them to stop the squeek! Only Joking! hehe


I will try again tomorow, and see if I can get it on my mates ramp, save me getting all itchy again!
